Nashik Municipal Corporation Appeals for Rs500 Crore Special Funding for Essential Civic Infrastructure
The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has formally approached Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis with a significant funding request, seeking a special allocation of Rs500 crore specifically designated for non-Kumbh related civic works. This substantial financial proposal aims to address critical infrastructure gaps that exist independently of the preparations for the upcoming religious event.
Formal Submission and Urgent Infrastructure Needs
Civic body's standing committee chairperson Machhindra Sanap recently delivered a detailed letter to the Chief Minister during a meeting in Mumbai, emphasizing the pressing necessity for comprehensive urban improvements. The submission outlines two primary areas requiring immediate attention: the upgrading of colony roads spanning all 31 municipal wards and the expansion of water supply networks in newly developing residential and commercial zones.
Sanap clarified the distinction between ongoing projects, stating, "While Kumbh-related infrastructure developments are progressing according to schedule, numerous essential civic improvements remain completely unfunded and require separate budgetary consideration." The proposed Rs500 crore allocation is specifically intended to strengthen internal road infrastructure, systematically replace aging and deteriorating pipelines, and ensure enhanced urban services in rapidly expanding areas of Nashik.
Comprehensive Road Development Strategy
Speaking to reporters, Sanap provided context about the broader transportation landscape, revealing that major arterial roads valued at approximately Rs1,250 crore are currently under development in anticipation of the Kumbh Mela. However, he stressed that this represents only one component of the city's transportation needs.
"Apart from the major Kumbh road works, there are many major and internal roads throughout the city which also require significant development and structural strengthening," Sanap explained. He described the current situation as critical, noting that the condition of internal roads within residential colonies across Nashik has deteriorated substantially, necessitating immediate relaying and reconstruction.
The standing committee chairperson further elaborated on the timing, emphasizing that "these non-Kumbh Mela works need to be undertaken on a war footing to properly facilitate city residents, particularly as the mega religious congregation approaches next year." This dual-track approach ensures that both event-specific infrastructure and general civic improvements proceed simultaneously.
Water Supply Network Modernization
Beyond transportation infrastructure, the funding request addresses another crucial aspect of urban development: water distribution systems. Sanap highlighted the parallel need to undertake comprehensive water supply-related works in newly developed areas while simultaneously improving the existing network.
The current water supply infrastructure is described as aging and inadequate, requiring replacement with modern systems featuring significantly increased distribution capacity. This component of the proposal recognizes Nashik's growth patterns and the corresponding demand for reliable, expanded water services in emerging neighborhoods.
