NCP MLA Demands Transparency on Thane's Massive Infrastructure Expenditure
In a significant development, NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad has called for a white paper on the recent infrastructure spending by the Thane Municipal Corporation. He raised critical questions about the allocation of a staggering Rs 32,000 crore, demanding clarity on whether this massive investment will translate into tangible benefits for the city's residents.
Questioning the Benefits of Infrastructure Investment
While interacting with the media, Awhad pointedly asked, "Rs 32,000 crore is being spent in and around Thane city, but will it translate into real benefits for residents of the city?" This query underscores growing concerns about the effectiveness and transparency of municipal spending in one of Maharashtra's key urban centers.
Core Municipal Responsibilities Remain Neglected
The MLA emphasized that the corporation's fundamental duties—including water supply, gutter maintenance, and meter management—continue to be erratic and unreliable. Despite the enormous financial outlay, these essential services have not seen the improvement that citizens rightfully expect from their local government.
Traffic Congestion: A Decade-Long Challenge
Awhad also expressed deep concern over the worsening traffic congestion in Thane. He claimed that the city is unlikely to be freed from this gridlock for at least the next 10 years, suggesting that current infrastructure projects may not adequately address this pressing urban issue. This statement highlights the disconnect between massive spending and on-ground realities faced by commuters daily.
Demand for Accountability and Public Scrutiny
The call for a white paper represents a push for greater accountability in municipal governance. By demanding detailed documentation of how Rs 32,000 crore is being utilized, Awhad aims to ensure that public funds are spent efficiently and transparently, with clear outcomes for Thane's development and residents' quality of life.
