Nagpur's East to Get Major Traffic Relief with Three New Flyovers by 2026
Nagpur East Traffic Relief: 3 Flyovers by 2026

Nagpur's Eastern Corridor Set for Major Traffic Transformation

Residents and commuters in East Nagpur, long plagued by severe traffic snarls, can finally anticipate substantial relief and significantly reduced travel times starting next year. The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (MRIDC), commonly known as MahaRail, has set an ambitious target to complete work on three major under-construction flyovers by December 2026.

Addressing Growing Traffic Volumes

Traffic volume in east Nagpur has surged dramatically in recent years, primarily due to the rapid expansion of residential areas and increased commercial activity. This growth has overwhelmed existing road networks, leading to chronic congestion at key junctions. Under the supervision of MahaRail Managing Director Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal, these flyover projects are being constructed specifically to strengthen the road infrastructure in these densely populated zones.

While the construction works are currently contributing to heavy traffic disruptions in the affected areas, MRIDC officials assert that multiple proactive measures are being implemented to ensure the smoothest possible movement of vehicles during this transitional phase.

Three Key Flyover Projects Detailed

The IOCL-Nirmal Nagari Flyover: Spanning an impressive 2.71 kilometers, this will be one of the longest structures in the region. It is designed to connect Wardhaman Nagar, near the IOCL petrol pump, directly with Nirmal Nagari. The project includes an additional ramp leading towards KDK College. Featuring 77 spans and an 11-meter-wide carriageway, this flyover is expected to drastically alleviate traffic pressure on the critical Wardhaman Nagar corridor.

The Rajendra Nagar-Hasanbag Chowk Flyover: This 924-meter-long elevated road will link Nandanvan's Rajendra Nagar with Hasanbagh Chowk. Authorities believe it will play a crucial role in streamlining traffic flow through densely populated residential neighborhoods and their intricate internal road systems.

The Jagnade Square Flyovers: This project involves constructing a pair of elevated corridors at the notoriously congested Jagnade Square. One flyover will connect Reshimbagh Chowk with KDK College Square, while the other will link Bhande Plot Chowk with Telephone Exchange Chowk. Traffic from numerous eastern localities converges at this square, making it a critical bottleneck. Temporary traffic diversions have already been enforced around the square to facilitate construction.

Additional Infrastructure and Recent Success

In a further boost to connectivity, MahaRail is also constructing an 898-meter-long flyover between Azam Shah Chowk and Marwadi Chowk, with a target completion date of December 2027. This structure promises to significantly strengthen regional connectivity. However, a specific portion of this project—merging the flyover with the Dahi Bazaar railway overbridge—is temporarily on hold. This pause follows guidelines from traffic police aimed at minimizing congestion until the Pachpaoli bridge becomes available as an alternative diversion route.

Meanwhile, commuters have already begun to experience the benefits of such infrastructure investments. The recent opening of the Lakadganj police station-Wardhaman Nagar flyover on December 15 last year has provided tangible relief, serving as a promising precursor to the larger transformations ahead.

This comprehensive infrastructure push by MahaRail is strategically focused on decongesting vital junctions including Wardhaman Nagar, Nandanvan, Hasanbag, and Jagnade Square. Upon completion, these projects are poised to revolutionize daily commutes, enhance economic activity, and improve the overall quality of life for Nagpur's eastern residents.
