Nagpur Railway Station Commuters Endure Extreme Heat Amid Transport Service Delays
As temperatures soar above 42°C in Nagpur, passengers arriving at the city's main Sitabuldi railway station are facing severe hardship. With app-based cab services still unavailable within station premises due to ongoing regulatory delays, travelers are forced to undertake exhausting walks with heavy luggage in scorching conditions.
Vulnerable Groups Bear the Brunt of Transport Chaos
Senior citizens, women traveling with children, and families are among the worst affected by the current transport crisis at one of Central India's busiest railway junctions. In the absence of organized transport options, autorickshaw operators have established dominance, dictating fares without regulation or oversight.
The situation has created what passengers describe as an autorickshaw mafia that controls access to transportation immediately outside the station. This unregulated network has led to widespread complaints of overcharging and exploitation of vulnerable travelers.
BharatCabs Tender Approval Stalled by Bureaucratic Hurdles
Months after Central Railway awarded a tender to BharatCabs for dedicated app-based cab operations at the station, the service rollout remains pending. Sources indicate the delay stems from the mandatory no-objection certificate required from a district-level committee.
This committee includes representatives from multiple agencies:
- Regional Transport Office (RTO)
- Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC)
- City Traffic Police Department
While the RTO holds authority to approve fare structures, final regulatory clearance from the complete committee remains outstanding. Officials familiar with the process confirm that documentation is largely complete, but procedural obstacles continue to stall implementation.
Passenger Safety and Health Concerns Mount
Commuters have raised multiple concerns about the current situation:
- Exhaustion and dehydration risks during peak heat hours
- Safety concerns for vulnerable travelers
- Congestion problems at both station gates
The absence of a designated pick-up zone within the station has forced passengers to walk significant distances with luggage toward Jaistambh Chowk and areas around Tekdi Ganesh temple to access cab services. This has led to chaotic conditions with private vehicles halting haphazardly on surrounding roads.
Railway Authorities Intensify Crackdown on Unauthorized Operators
In response to the growing crisis, railway authorities have stepped up enforcement actions against unauthorized autorickshaws operating near the station premises. Teams from both the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) are conducting regular operations targeting operators accused of overcharging passengers.
"Once organized cab services begin, the influence of this unregulated network will reduce significantly, ensuring transparency and fixed fares for all passengers," a source close to the development explained.
Another official added, "The tender was specifically revived to ease commuter hardship, but these persistent delays in approvals have unfortunately prolonged the problem rather than solving it."
The ongoing transport crisis at Nagpur's primary railway station highlights the urgent need for coordinated action between multiple government agencies. With summer temperatures expected to remain high, pressure is mounting for a swift resolution to provide relief to thousands of daily commuters.
