MUMBAI: In a dramatic security alert on Thursday morning, all staff members at Vidhan Bhavan, the seat of Maharashtra's state legislature, were evacuated from the premises. This precautionary measure was taken after the legislature received a detailed email containing threats of bombs and missiles, prompting an immediate and extensive search operation across the complex.
Early Morning Threat Disrupts Legislative Proceedings
The threatening email arrived precisely at 6:57 am, according to official statements, catching authorities at a time when most legislators had not yet arrived for the day. Despite the alarming nature of the threat, the budget session of the legislature proceeded as scheduled later in the day, demonstrating resilience in the face of potential danger.
State Legislative Council Chairman Ram Shinde confirmed that the email did not target Vidhan Bhavan alone. "The mail also mentioned the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Metro systems, the high court, and several banks," Shinde revealed, indicating a broader scope of the threat that required coordinated security responses across multiple key institutions in Mumbai.
Security Forces Spring Into Action
In response to the threat, authorities immediately deployed specialized security teams to assess the situation. "The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) and the dog squad were called in to thoroughly inspect the Vidhan Bhavan premises and investigate the matter," Shinde stated, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the security response.
Minister of State for Home Pankaj Bhoyar provided crucial context about the threat's nature. "Prima facie the mail seemed to be a hoax, but we have made all necessary security arrangements regardless," Bhoyar explained. "Since there is a war going on in the Gulf region, the email used terminology like missiles. However, it appears to be a hoax, so there is no need for public panic."
Police Investigation Uncovers Additional Details
The police investigation has revealed significant details about the threat's origins and content. According to law enforcement officials, the threatening email specifically mentioned the 'Khalistan National Army' in its text, adding a political dimension to the security incident.
An official offense has been registered at the Marine Drive police station against an unknown email sender, based on a complaint filed by Vidhan Bhavan's security officer. The investigation is actively pursuing multiple leads, including tracing the email's origin through its ID and IP address.
Shinde provided additional context about the email's delivery method. "The threat email was sent to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) branch email id," he noted. "Since the threat mentioned four other locations besides Vidhan Bhavan, police are conducting inspections in those areas as well. The email also included specific timing details, which we are taking seriously."
Authorities Assure Public Safety
Despite the concerning nature of the threat, multiple officials have moved to reassure the public about safety measures. Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam stated unequivocally, "The bomb squad has completed its inspection of the premises and the legislature is completely safe. There is no threat of any kind here at present."
A senior police officer confirmed that similar threat emails were received at the Bombay Stock Exchange and the high court on the same morning. "Adequate security measures have been implemented and remain in place at all threatened locations," the officer emphasized. "Necessary legal actions are being pursued at the respective police stations to identify and apprehend those responsible."
