Mamata Banerjee to Address 12,000+ Traders at Byabasayi Sammelan 2025 in Kolkata
Mamata to Address Major Traders' Sammelan in Kolkata on Dec 17

Kolkata is set to host a landmark event for the state's business community, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee scheduled to address a massive congregation of traders and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The Byabasayi Sammelan 2025 will be held at the Netaji Indoor Stadium on December 17.

A Historic Gathering for Bengal's Trading Community

Organised by the Confederation of West Bengal Trade Association (CWBTA), the sammelan is anticipated to be the largest assembly of traders in decades. Over 12,000 traders and MSME representatives are expected to attend the one-day event, which takes place just a day before the Bengal Business Conclave. CWBTA President Sushil Poddar confirmed that participants will be arriving from every district of West Bengal, highlighting the event's statewide significance.

The CWBTA, which serves as the apex body for more than 100 trade associations, believes this gathering underscores the critical role traders play. An estimated 60 to 65 lakh traders operate across Bengal, creating livelihood opportunities for over one crore people, including a vast number in the unorganized sector. They form the backbone of the state's supply chain, ensuring smooth goods movement and supporting small enterprises.

The Economic Backbone and Gateway of Eastern India

Sushil Poddar emphasized the indispensable contribution of traders to Bengal's economy. He noted that the trading community generates substantial revenue and enables crucial economic linkages with neighbouring states. Furthermore, Bengal's extensive trading network significantly contributes to cross-border commerce with Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan.

This network reinforces West Bengal's position as a key commercial gateway for eastern India. The event aims to build on this strength by fostering a more prosperous and progressive business environment.

Agenda: Ease of Business and Modernization

The primary objective of the Byabasayi Sammelan is to promote a forward-looking business future for Bengal. The agenda will focus on several key areas essential for growth:

  • Enhancing the ease of doing business in the state.
  • Modernizing trade infrastructure to meet contemporary demands.
  • Addressing practical, on-ground challenges faced by traders daily.
  • Strengthening cooperation and dialogue between the government and the trading community.

The direct address by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is seen as a pivotal moment for traders to voice their concerns and aspirations directly to the state's leadership. The event represents a significant effort to align government policy with the needs of a community that is fundamental to Bengal's economic engine.
