Maharashtra Budget 2026-27 Unveils Comprehensive Vidarbha Development Strategy
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday presented an ambitious development blueprint for Vidarbha in the Maharashtra Budget for 2026-27, positioning Nagpur as a future economic powerhouse while announcing substantial investments across infrastructure, agriculture, health, industry, and aviation sectors throughout the region.
Major Relief for Vidarbha Farmers
The Budget introduces significant financial relief for thousands of cotton and paddy farmers across Vidarbha through the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Farmer Loan Waiver Scheme. Eligible farmers with overdue crop loans as of September 30, 2025, will receive waivers of up to Rs 2 lakh, while those who have maintained timely loan repayments will receive incentive grants of Rs 50,000 each.
Nagpur Transformed into Economic Growth Hub
The government outlined comprehensive plans to develop Nagpur as a major growth center through the creation of "New Nagpur," a dedicated trade and financial district designed to mirror the success of Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex. This initiative aims to establish Nagpur as a primary economic node within Maharashtra, supported by expanded transport networks and large-scale projects targeting employment generation and enhanced regional connectivity across multiple districts.
Infrastructure Expansion Across Vidarbha
Infrastructure development formed a central pillar of the Budget proposals, with several transformative projects announced:
- A new ring road for Nagpur city to alleviate congestion and improve traffic flow
- New industrial and logistics corridors connecting Nagpur with Gondia, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, and Chandrapur to the Samruddhi Expressway
- Establishment of a Geotechnology Application Centre in Nagpur
- Creation of a Maharashtra Public Health Institute in collaboration with national institutions like IIM to support training and research at AIIMS Nagpur
- Development of a State Disaster Response Force facility at Mihan to strengthen emergency response infrastructure for central India
Major Irrigation Investment for Agricultural Transformation
One of the most significant financial commitments in the Budget was the allocation of approximately Rs 95,000 crore for the ambitious Wainganga-Nal Ganga river linking project. This massive irrigation initiative is expected to dramatically expand water capacity across Vidarbha, addressing long-standing water shortages in the region's agricultural districts and potentially transforming the entire irrigation landscape.
Cultural and Creative Sector Development
The government proposed substantial initiatives in cultural and creative sectors, including:
- Development of Maharashtra's third state film city at Navargaon in Ramtek taluka of Nagpur district to encourage film production and create employment opportunities for artists and technicians
- Implementation of the second phase of the Ramtek Development Plan to promote tourism and infrastructure in the historic town
- Creation of a Timber Museum and Xylarium in Ballarpur, Chandrapur district to preserve the region's teak heritage and support forest resource research
Industrial Expansion and Environmental Conservation
Industrial development in Gadchiroli received prominent attention with plans to establish the district as a "Gadchiroli Steel Hub" through an estimated investment of Rs 2.61 lakh crore, potentially generating 70,895 jobs. Authorities also outlined ambitious biodiversity conservation efforts linked to the project, including plans to plant five crore trees across the region.
Aviation Infrastructure Enhancement
The Budget included significant aviation infrastructure improvements, with land acquisition already completed for a greenfield airport in Gadchiroli. Night-landing facilities will be introduced at airports in Amravati and Yavatmal, while funds have been earmarked for the expansion of Amravati, Akola, and Yavatmal airports to enhance regional connectivity.
Religious and Educational Initiatives
To commemorate Sant Gadge Baba's 150th birth anniversary, the government will develop a special "Teerthkshetra Circuit" connecting his birthplace, workplaces, and memorial sites. Separate funding has been allocated for developing various Mahanubhav Panth religious sites across Vidarbha.
In the education sector, the government will establish the Dr Punjabrao Deshmukh Educational Complex in Amravati to consolidate multiple education department offices on a single campus, improving administrative efficiency and service delivery.
Officials emphasized that the comprehensive Budget reflects a determined effort to address long-standing development demands from Vidarbha, marking a significant step toward regional economic transformation and improved quality of life for residents across multiple districts.
