Kolhapur's Modern MSRTC Bus Stands Finally Open After Prolonged Delay
In a significant boost to public transportation infrastructure, the newly constructed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar MSRTC bus stand in Kolhapur city was officially inaugurated on Friday, marking the end of a two-year delay. The ceremony was presided over by State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, who also inaugurated three additional bus stand buildings across Kolhapur district on the same day.
Inauguration Schedule and Minister's Itinerary
As part of his visit to Kolhapur, Minister Sarnaik commenced the day with an inspection of the Central Bus Stand at 11 am. Following this, he offered prayers at the Mahalaxmi Temple and visited the Datt Temple in Nrusinhwadi. The inauguration program kicked off at 12:30 pm with the opening of the Peth Vadgaon bus stand building. At 2:20 pm, the Jaysingpur bus stand was inaugurated, culminating in the formal opening of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar bus stand building in Kolhapur city at 4 pm for public use.
Background and Financial Investment
The redevelopment of MSRTC bus stands across Kolhapur district was initiated during the tenure of then Minister of State for Transport and Guardian Minister Satej Patil. Under this initiative, a substantial financial allocation was made to modernize the facilities. Specifically, Rs 9.80 crore was sanctioned for the renovation of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar MSRTC bus stand, with the ambitious goal of transforming it into a modern facility akin to an airport terminal. Additional funds included Rs 2 crore for the Jaysingpur bus stand and Rs 1 crore each for the Peth Vadgaon and Wathar bus stands.
Construction Timeline and Delays
Construction of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar bus stand began in December 2020 and was completed in April 2024. Despite the completion of work, the modern and architecturally attractive building remained unopened for nearly two years, causing frustration among residents and commuters. The revamped bus stand has been strategically developed to alleviate congestion at the Central Bus Stand and reduce bus traffic on the city's major roads, aiming to improve overall urban mobility.
Expected Benefits and Public Reaction
The inauguration of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar bus stand is anticipated to significantly benefit MSRTC passengers from the southern and western parts of Kolhapur city. Welcoming this development, Nilesh Chougule, a resident of Timber Market who travels to Pune for work every week, expressed relief and optimism. He stated, "The Sambhajinagar MSRTC bus stand will serve as a much-needed alternative to the Central Bus Stand. I will now be able to board buses from here instead of travelling all the way to CBS, saving time and reducing hassle." This sentiment reflects the broader community's long-awaited anticipation for enhanced public transport options in the region.
