Kolhapur Women Stage Road Blockade Over Persistent Water Woes
In a dramatic display of frustration, women residents from the Jagtap Nagar area in Kolhapur city organized a rasta-roko protest on Wednesday morning. The demonstration was triggered by an irregular and unreliable water supply that has plagued their neighborhood for several days, with many reporting a complete lack of tap water for weeks.
Protesters Highlight Inequitable Distribution and Demand Change
The protesters voiced strong allegations of neglect, pointing out that while surrounding areas enjoy regular water access, their own community faces severe scarcity. Jyoti Salunkhe, one of the participants, emphasized the chronic nature of the problem, stating, "Water scarcity in our area is not new, but despite repeated requests to the civic administration, the issue has not been resolved. When surrounding areas are receiving ample water, why is our area neglected?"
In response to these grievances, the women have demanded the immediate replacement of the water key operator responsible for their zone, citing inefficiency and mismanagement as primary causes of the ongoing crisis.
Traffic Disruptions and Official Response
The protest led to significant traffic congestion, inconveniencing a large number of commuters during the morning rush hour. Roads were blocked as the women sat in protest, drawing attention to their plight and disrupting normal city movement.
Meanwhile, Harshjit Ghatge, a water supply official from the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC), addressed the situation by announcing that rectification work has already begun. He assured the public, "Reasons for their area receiving improper water supply will soon be traced, and the issue will be resolved." This statement aims to provide some reassurance, but residents remain skeptical given the prolonged nature of the problem.
The incident underscores broader civic challenges in urban water management, highlighting the urgent need for equitable distribution and responsive administrative action in Kolhapur.
