Kolhapur Water Dispute Resolution Reached After Supply Cut
The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation and the state irrigation department have successfully negotiated a positive consensus to resolve their long-standing financial disputes and recovery issues, according to official statements released on Wednesday. This crucial agreement comes exactly five days after the irrigation department took the drastic step of cutting off KMC's water supply on March 20 due to outstanding arrears, which prompted the civic body to retaliate by sealing the irrigation department's Tarabai Park office over unpaid tax dues.
Coordination Meeting Breaks Deadlock
A high-level coordination meeting chaired by Kolhapur Mayor Rouparani Nikam proved instrumental in moving the contentious matter forward. During this pivotal Wednesday meeting, officials engaged in comprehensive discussions about the substantial outstanding amounts owed by both governmental entities. According to KMC records, the irrigation department currently owes the municipal corporation approximately Rs 10 crore in various dues, while the civic body itself owes a staggering Rs 160 crore to the irrigation department for water supply services.
"During Wednesday's meeting, an in-depth discussion was held about the outstanding amounts owed by both sides," revealed an official with direct knowledge of the meeting details. "KMC requested verification of previous payments made to the irrigation department and proposed adjusting these amounts against the total dues. KMC has also approached the arbitration tribunal seeking a waiver of the charges and penalties imposed by the irrigation department."
Payment Progress and Government Intervention
Officials confirmed that KMC has already paid Rs 7.40 crore to the irrigation department during the current fiscal year and aims to make an additional payment before March 31, contingent upon fund availability. Following the productive meeting, Mayor Nikam announced that a final decision regarding the potential waiver of the irrigation department's outstanding charges would be determined during an upcoming government-level meeting involving higher authorities.
Key Participants in Resolution Process
The significant meeting featured prominent officials from both departments, including KMC Commissioner K Manjulekshmi, Irrigation Department Executive Officer Smita Mane, KMC Deputy Mayor Akshay Jarag, Additional Commissioner Shilpa Darekar, Water Engineer Harshjit Ghatge, Women and Child Welfare Committee Chairperson Kausar Bagwan, Opposition Leader Rajesh Latkar, House Leader Murlidhar Jadhav, and Shiv Sena Group Leader Sharangdhar Deshmukh. Their collective participation underscores the importance both governmental bodies placed on resolving this critical infrastructure and financial impasse affecting Kolhapur's residents.
