This political shift follows the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation elections, which were successfully held on January 15 after a prolonged hiatus of 10 years. Since November 2020, the corporation had been operating under an administrator's rule, making these elections particularly crucial for restoring democratic governance.

The Mahayuti alliance currently commands a majority in the House with 45 corporators, comprising 26 from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 15 from Shiv Sena, and 4 from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Although the Congress party emerged as the single-largest party with 34 seats, the consolidated strength of the Mahayuti alliance positions it favorably to claim the mayor's post.
Political observers note that if the Mahayuti alliance maintains its cohesion, the BJP is expected to assert its claim for the mayor's position, leveraging its substantial representation within the coalition.
Frontrunners and Contenders for Mayor
With the OBC reservation now firmly established, attention has turned to the seven to eight OBC corporators from the BJP who are eligible for consideration. Among them, two names have emerged as prominent frontrunners in Kolhapur's political circles.
Vijaysinh Desai, popularly known as Rinku Desai, serves as the corporator from Ward 9 and secured his victory with the highest number of votes in his constituency. He has established himself as a familiar and respected figure throughout the city and district.
Vijaysinh Khade represents another strong contender, having won his corporator position for the second consecutive term. He is widely regarded as a close associate of Minister Chandrakant Patil, which could potentially influence the selection process.
The BJP might also consider Ruparani Nikam if the party decides to provide an opportunity to an OBC woman candidate. Nikam has similarly been elected as a corporator for her second term, demonstrating her electoral appeal and experience.

Beyond these primary contenders, the Mahayuti alliance has several other names in consideration for the mayor's post. The list includes Murlidhar Jadhav, Vishal Shirale, Vaibhav Kumbhar, Anuradha Khedekar, Madhavi Gawandi, Pramod Desai, Ajay Ingawle, Ashkin Ajrekar, and Kousar Bagwan, among others. This diverse pool of candidates reflects the competitive nature of the selection process within the ruling coalition.

Mahesh Jadhav, BJP's state secretary, emphasized the importance of recognizing grassroots contributions in the selection process. He stated, "Party workers strongly believe that this opportunity should be awarded to those dedicated workers who have played instrumental roles in BJP's growth within the city. We advocate that all posts, candidates, and opportunities should not be monopolized by the affluent sections alone. The ultimate decision will be made by the senior leadership of our party."
Shiv Sena's Assertive Campaign
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MLA Rajesh Kshirsagar has launched a visible campaign across the city, erecting banners at several major chowks with a powerful message: "Dream of Balasaheb Thackeray becomes true. Kolhapur will get Shiv Sena mayor." This assertive move indicates Shiv Sena's determination to stake its claim for the mayor's position, potentially introducing additional complexity to the alliance dynamics.
