Kerala Chief Minister Sounds Alarm Over LPG Shortage Crisis
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan issued an urgent appeal to the Union government on Wednesday, demanding immediate action to guarantee sufficient LPG availability and shield consumers from escalating cooking gas prices. The veteran leader cautioned that persistent shortages could have devastating consequences for both households and the state's extensive food service sector.
Mounting Concerns Amid Regional Conflict
In a detailed statement, Vijayan highlighted that nationwide anxieties regarding cooking gas accessibility have intensified significantly due to the ongoing Middle East conflict. He pointed to a recent substantial hike in LPG prices that has already placed considerable strain on family budgets across Kerala. Compounding this financial pressure, multiple reports of actual cylinder shortages are now emerging from various districts within the state.
The situation has been critically exacerbated by an existing policy restriction that limits domestic LPG bookings to just once every 27 days, creating a perfect storm of reduced access and higher costs. "The profound uncertainty surrounding LPG availability threatens to ripple through our service economy, potentially crippling hotels and restaurants that form the backbone of local commerce," Vijayan emphasized.
Vulnerable Populations and Economic Fallout
The Chief Minister drew attention to Kerala's unique demographic and economic landscape, which makes it particularly vulnerable to such disruptions. A substantial portion of the state's workforce commutes regularly between districts for employment, while Kerala also hosts a large migrant labor population from other Indian states. Both these groups frequently depend on hotels and restaurants for their daily nutritional needs.
Vijayan warned that if the gas supply disruption continues unabated, numerous food establishments could face the grim prospect of suspending operations entirely, leaving thousands without access to affordable meals and causing significant unemployment in the hospitality sector.
Formal Appeal for Central Intervention
In response to this escalating crisis, Chief Minister Vijayan has formally written to Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, urging prompt central government intervention. His letter states clearly: "Due to the acute shortage of LPG cylinders, hotel and restaurant associations have informed us that many establishments may not be able to function normally. The resulting hardship inflicted upon the general public will be substantial and widespread."
The Kerala leader has specifically requested that the Centre implement decisive measures to ensure a steady, reliable supply of LPG at reasonable prices for both domestic consumers and commercial establishments. He suggested this might include necessary budgetary subsidy support to stabilize the market and protect vulnerable populations from price shocks.
Political Criticism and Planned Protests
Adding political weight to the administrative concerns, CPM state secretary M V Govindan launched a sharp critique against the central government's handling of the situation. Govindan accused the Centre of failing to maintain mandatory reserve stocks of LPG, a fundamental responsibility during times of international supply chain stress.
"The Centre has completely failed to take preventive steps to avert this emergency scenario. They have neglected the established international protocol of maintaining at least 80 days of LPG reserve, leaving our citizens exposed and vulnerable," Govindan asserted. He announced that the CPM would organize widespread protest programs across Kerala, condemning what the party views as the Centre's additional burdening of people through continuous LPG price increases amidst the shortage.
The growing LPG crisis in Kerala, set against the backdrop of Middle East geopolitical tensions, now presents a significant challenge to both state administration and central policy, with millions of households and businesses anxiously awaiting a sustainable resolution.
