Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday issued a strong caution against panic buying of fuel, warning that petrol pumps could be forcibly shut down for several days if residents continue to crowd fuel stations based on unfounded rumors.
Responding to widespread reports of long queues forming at fuel outlets across the Union Territory, Abdullah emphasized that there is no actual shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG. He urgently appealed to the public to avoid what he described as "camping outside petrol pumps" and to rely on official information instead of social media speculation.
Government Assurances Ignored Amid Rumors
Abdullah expressed deep concern over the situation, stating, "My earnest request is that you stop lining up unnecessarily, otherwise I will be forced to shut all petrol pumps for the next few days." He highlighted that a recent government review had confirmed adequate availability of fuel and cooking gas, with the supply situation remaining stable and unchanged.
The chief minister lamented the public's tendency to disregard official communications, noting, "It is regrettable that when the government speaks, no one listens, but everyone believes rumors." He clarified that there has been no directive from authorities to restrict fuel usage and urged citizens to depend solely on verified updates from government channels.
