Coimbatore Village Threatens Election Boycott Over Severe Water Crisis
Residents of Immidipalayam in Coimbatore district have issued a stark warning to authorities, threatening to boycott the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly election on April 23. Their demand is clear: a permanent and reliable drinking water supply for their village, which has been without adequate water for the past three months.
Community Struggles and Political Discontent
Immidipalayam, located in the Solavampalayam panchayat under the Kinathukadavu constituency, is home to nearly 400 families from the Arunthathiar community, comprising around 1,150 voters. The villagers have expressed deep frustration over the prolonged water shortage, stating that all efforts to seek help from local authorities and sitting MLA S Damodaran have proven futile.
P Selvi, a 60-year-old resident, shared her ordeal: "We are forced to walk at least four kilometres just to fetch one pot of drinking water. The elected MLA does not care about our problems. He visited the area a few weeks ago to distribute gift items to voters, but no real development has been carried out here." She emphasized that the entire village is disappointed and will boycott the election unless a permanent solution is provided.
Infrastructure Issues and Official Responses
Another resident, A K Periyar Mani, highlighted the bureaucratic hurdles faced by the community. "Whenever we approach the authorities for a solution, they give different reasons for the disruption of water supply. Breakage and leakage in the water pipeline are the major issues. There is an alternative water line within a kilometre, from which a new connection could be given to the village. However, officials say it comes under a different scheme, and they cannot alter it or draw water from it," he explained.
A Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board official acknowledged the problem, noting that Immidipalayam is situated at the tail end of the panchayat. Water is supplied from Ambarampalayam through four pumping stations before reaching the village. The official cited damage to the pipeline caused by road work, electric pole erection, and other construction activities as the primary reason for the disruption. "We are planning alternative ways to bring water to the village," he assured, though residents remain skeptical given the prolonged neglect.

With the election looming, the threat of a boycott serves as a powerful statement against political apathy.
