IUML Steps In to Save Senior Leader M K Muneer's Ancestral Home from Bank Attachment
In a significant display of party solidarity, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has intervened to rescue former minister and senior party leader M K Muneer from losing his ancestral home, 'Crescent House,' located in Nadakkavu, Kozhikode. The party cleared an outstanding loan of Rs 49 lakh, thereby averting attachment proceedings initiated by the Calicut Town Service Cooperative Bank.
Emotional and Historical Significance of Crescent House
The house holds deep emotional and historical importance for both Muneer and the IUML. Built by his father, former chief minister and IUML stalwart C H Mohammed Koya, Crescent House has served as a crucial venue for key party discussions and decision-making over many years. It stands as a symbol of the party's legacy and familial ties within the political landscape of Kerala.
Bank Notice and Timely Intervention
Calicut Town Service Cooperative Bank had recently issued a notice warning of attachment proceedings if the dues were not cleared by March 31. The IUML, upon learning of the situation, deposited the amount through its official account, effectively preventing the loss of the property. This swift action underscores the party's commitment to supporting its members in times of need.
Muneer's Personal Struggle and Party Support
Muneer revealed that he had not informed the party about his financial difficulties, as the loan was taken for personal renovation purposes. "I did not want to burden the party. But the leadership reached out and assured me support," he stated, referring to calls from party state president Panakkad Sadikkali Shihab Thangal and national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Muneer expressed profound gratitude, emphasizing that the party stood by him with unwavering support during this challenging phase. He noted that this episode reaffirmed his belief that 'love and relationships are greater than material wealth.'
Overwhelming Support from Community and Well-Wishers
Muneer also highlighted the overwhelming support he received from various quarters, including old classmates, close friends, acquaintances, and even strangers from cultural, social, and artistic fields both in India and abroad. "This gives me a joy I can hardly describe. Even those who do not know us personally reached out, consoled me and offered help. I see this as a genuine expression of human compassion," he shared.
He extended his prayers and thanks to all who offered comfort and assistance, stating, "I pray that your support and prayers continue, and I thank each of you from the bottom of my heart."
Details of the Loan and Settlement
The original loan amounted to Rs 70 lakh, taken for renovation purposes. While Muneer had made partial repayments, the outstanding sum had ballooned to Rs 58 lakh due to accrued interest and penalties. The bank eventually agreed to a one-time settlement of Rs 49 lakh, which the IUML promptly paid to resolve the matter.
This incident not only highlights the personal financial challenges faced by political figures but also showcases the strong bonds within the IUML, reinforcing its role as a supportive community for its leaders beyond mere political affiliations.
