Constituency Profile

Straddling Kerala's Malappuram district along the banks of the Bharathapuzha River, the Ponnani Assembly constituency holds the 48th position among the state's 140 legislative seats. It is part of the Ponnani Lok Sabha constituency. This general seat has over 210,000 voters from a mixed Muslim and Hindu populace, with voter turnout typically around 70 percent. The constituency encompasses Ponnani town and several coastal grama panchayats in north Kerala.

Historically, Ponnani bucks the regional trend of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) dominance and has been a stronghold of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), highlighting CPI(M)'s enduring influence in this historic port hub.

2026 Election Dynamics

Facing the 2026 elections, Ponnani's LDF lineage since the 1980s, except for occasional UDF victories, hinges on issues such as agrarian reforms, fisheries welfare, and flood resilience. As IUML mounts counteroffensives through UDF channels, this counterpoint seat's fortunes could recalibrate north Kerala's delicate UDF-LDF equilibrium. The latest results reflect a shift in voter sentiment, with INC reclaiming the seat after previous losses.
