The Telangana government has undertaken a significant administrative overhaul, redefining the jurisdictional boundaries of the police commissionerates in the Greater Hyderabad region. This move notably excludes the traditional Secunderabad Cantonment area and Begumpet from the purview of the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate.
New Police Administrative Map Unveiled
The restructuring creates a clearer demarcation between the four police commissionerates: Hyderabad, Cyberabad, Malkajgiri (which was formerly known as Rachakonda), and the newly conceptualized Fourth City. The state government, on Monday, appointed new police commissioners to head each of these commissionerates, with the exception of the Hyderabad Commissionerate which retains its existing chief.
The Hyderabad Police Commissionerate will now operate across seven distinct zones, encompassing 26 police divisions and a total of 72 police stations. The zones under its command are Charminar, Golkonda, Khairathabad 1, Khairathabad 2, Rajendranagar, Secunderabad, and Shamshabad. Important areas like Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Abids, and the Rajiv Gandhi International (RGI) Airport fall under this commissionerate's revised map.
Revised Roles for Malkajgiri and Cyberabad
In a key change, the Begumpet area, along with the Secunderabad Cantonment, now falls under the Malkajgiri Commissionerate. This commissionerate is structured into four zones: Begumpet, LB Nagar, Malkajgiri, and Uppal. It comprises 10 divisions and 30 police stations, covering areas such as Alwal, Bowenpally, LB Nagar, Uppal, and Ghatkesar.
The Cyberabad Commissionerate continues to oversee the city's IT and industrial hubs across three zones: Serilingampally, Kukatpally, and Qutubullapur. With 7 divisions and 12 police stations, its jurisdiction includes critical areas like Gachibowli, Madhapur, HITEC City, Kukatpally, and Patancheru.
Introduction of the Fourth City Commissionerate
The government's plan also outlines a Fourth City Commissionerate, intended to manage the expanding peripheral regions of Greater Hyderabad. This new entity is slated to cover a wide range of areas including Shankarpally, Chevella, Shamshabad, Maheshwaram, Kandukur, Pharma City, and Ibrahimpatnam, among others. This move is seen as a step towards managing urban sprawl and future growth.
This comprehensive reorganisation aims to streamline policing, improve administrative efficiency, and cater to the unique law and order needs of different parts of the rapidly growing capital city. The exclusion of the Cantonment area marks a significant shift in its traditional administrative linkage with Hyderabad city policing.
