Excise Seizes 500L Illicit Liquor in T'puram, 2 Arrested

In a significant crackdown on the illegal liquor trade, the excise department in Thiruvananthapuram conducted extensive raids across the district on Monday, seizing large quantities of illicit liquor and arresting two individuals. The operations were part of a special enforcement drive launched for the Christmas and New Year period.

Major Haul from House and Autorickshaw

The most substantial seizure occurred at Vettampally in the Nedumangad area. Excise officials confiscated a total of 50 litres of ready-to-sell illicit arrack and a massive 450 litres of wash. Wash is the fermented liquid used in the distillation process to produce liquor. The contraband was discovered hidden in a house and an autorickshaw.

The accused in this case was identified as Madhu, also known as Kaattilakuzhi Madhu. Authorities described him as a habitual offender. He is reportedly named as an accused in more than ten criminal and Abkari cases registered at various police stations and excise offices within the district.

Second Arrest During Attempted Sale

In a separate incident on the same day, excise officials apprehended another individual involved in the illicit liquor trade. The accused, 45-year-old Jose Prakash, a native of Thekkada, was caught red-handed while allegedly selling illegal arrack.

Officials stated that Prakash attempted to flee the scene upon spotting the excise team. However, after a brief chase, he was successfully apprehended. A search of his possession following the arrest led to the seizure of 20 litres of illicit arrack.

Continued Vigilance Promised

The excise department has made it clear that these inspections are not a one-off event. Special drives will continue in the coming days as part of the festive season enforcement. The primary objective is to aggressively curb the manufacture, transport, and sale of illicit liquor across Thiruvananthapuram district.

This intensified action aims to ensure public safety and compliance with liquor laws during the holiday period when demand typically sees an increase. The department's focus remains on disrupting supply chains and nabbing repeat offenders involved in the illegal trade.
