Former Maoist Leader Advocates for Legal Political Space in Telangana
In a significant development, Devuji, also known as Tippiri Tirupati, a prominent Maoist figure who recently joined the mainstream, has appealed to Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to push for the lifting of the ban on the Communist Party of India (Maoist). He asserts that if granted political recognition, the party would operate within legal boundaries and dissolve its armed wing, the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA).
Key Demands for Peaceful Transition
Devuji outlined several critical demands during a conversation with the media on Friday, emphasizing a shift from underground militancy to open political engagement. His primary request is for the Telangana government to advocate for the removal of the ban on CPI (Maoist), which is enforced under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and falls under central jurisdiction. He noted that Chief Minister Reddy has already discussed this matter with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Additional demands include:
- Release of jailed Maoist leaders, activists, and sympathisers, whom he labels as political prisoners.
- Provision of economic and social support for families of those killed in the Maoist movement, especially those lacking housing or financial stability.
- An end to what he describes as harassment under the "Urban Naxal" label and repeal of the UAPA, which he claims is used to target individuals based on ideology.
Clarification on Misreported Demands
Devuji addressed reports that he had sought Rs 1 crore and five acres of land for surrendered Maoists, stating that these claims were made hastily and do not form part of the official agenda. He characterized such demands as a mistake, clarifying that his focus is on legal recognition and peaceful political participation rather than material incentives.
Commitment to Public and Legal Struggle
Explaining his transition, Devuji stated that he did not surrender out of fear or for personal gain but was arrested by Telangana police during Operation Kagar while attempting to reorganize the party. He views his current path as a continuation of political life, now oriented towards addressing daily and fundamental issues through public and legal means.
He emphasized that this shift should not be seen as a deceptive tactic but as a genuine commitment to peaceful political engagement.
Broader Political Agenda
Beyond the immediate demands, Devuji outlined a broader political stance aimed at combating what he terms "RSS-BJP fascism" and addressing pressing social issues. His agenda includes fighting poverty, promoting the self-respect of Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Backward Classes (BC) communities, and advocating for environmental protection.
