Duliajan Braces for Intense Electoral Showdown in Dibrugarh District
Duliajan, located in Assam's Dibrugarh district, is preparing for one of its most fiercely contested electoral battles in recent memory. Political analysts have identified this assembly seat as one of the six in the district where the Congress party has a genuine opportunity to unseat the BJP. This potential shift is largely driven by a powerful wave of anti-incumbency sentiment, fueled by two decades of persistent issues such as crumbling roads, chronic waterlogging, and unchecked floods and erosion.
Key Candidates and Political Dynamics
The principal contest in Duliajan is set between former Union minister of state and two-time BJP MLA Rameswar Teli and Congress candidate Dhrubajyoti Gogoi. Additionally, JMM's Peter Minj and independents Biju Gogoi and Aruna Bora are also in the fray, adding complexity to the electoral landscape.
In a significant move that underscores the ruling party's anxiety over this seat, the BJP decided to drop incumbent MLA Terash Gowala. Gowala had held the seat for ten consecutive years, winning elections in 2016 and 2021. He has been replaced by Rameswar Teli, a heavyweight with considerable political pedigree. This replacement just before the election is widely seen as an admission of underlying problems within the constituency.
Ananta Gogoi, a resident of Duliajan, commented, "Replacing your sitting MLA just before an election is an admission that something has gone seriously wrong. BJP knows Gowala's record on roads and infrastructure was indefensible."Infrastructure Failures and Voter Discontent
Despite holding the seat for a decade, Terash Gowala leaves behind constituencies where most roads remain in a deplorable condition. What makes BJP's position particularly uncomfortable is that Rameswar Teli governed this same constituency for the ten years prior to Gowala. During Teli's tenure, the road infrastructure was also in terrible shape, highlighting a long-standing neglect of basic amenities.
Bhaskar Handique, a voter in Duliajan, expressed frustration, "People are saying that Teli had ten years, Gowala had ten. Twenty years and still the same broken roads. Whose turn is it to fix them now?" This sentiment reflects widespread voter discontent over the lack of progress in addressing critical infrastructure issues.
Strategic Alliances and Electoral Arithmetic
Congress has fielded Dhrubajyoti Gogoi, who came agonizingly close to victory in the 2021 elections, losing to Terash Gowala by a margin of 8,110 votes. A critical factor in that election was the participation of AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, who polled 24,192 votes. Political observers believe that had Lurinjyoti not split the anti-BJP vote, Dhrubajyoti would have won comfortably.
This time, with Congress and AJP fighting as allies, the electoral equation has shifted dramatically in favor of the opposition. The consolidation of anti-BJP votes is expected to bolster Dhrubajyoti Gogoi's chances significantly.
Rajkumar Mahato, a Congress worker in Duliajan, stated confidently, "The arithmetic is simple. The votes that went to AJP last time are coming to us now. Dhrubajyoti will win." This alliance could prove decisive in a tightly contested battle.
Broader Implications for Assam Politics
The Duliajan election is not just a local contest but a microcosm of larger political trends in Assam. It highlights the challenges faced by the BJP in maintaining its stronghold amid growing voter dissatisfaction over governance issues. For Congress, this seat represents a crucial opportunity to regain ground and demonstrate its relevance in state politics.
As voters in Duliajan head to the polls, the outcome will be closely watched by political analysts and parties alike. The result could signal shifts in voter behavior and set the tone for future electoral battles in the region.
