Strong public opposition has surfaced in Dharwad following the controversial decision to shut down the local Aadhaar Seva Kendra and relocate its services to Hubballi. The move has sparked protests from political and social groups, who argue it will cause significant hardship for residents of Dharwad and surrounding rural areas.
Demonstrations at DC Office Demand Reversal
On Monday, the district administration's office in Dharwad became the focal point of dissent. Separate demonstrations were organized, with protestors united in their demand to keep the Aadhaar Seva Kendra operational in Dharwad. The protests highlighted widespread discontent with the central government's decision.
Leading the charge, Congress leader Deepak Chinchore directly accused Union Minister Pralhad Joshi of being behind the shift of the essential facility from Dharwad to Hubballi. Chinchore emphasized the centre's critical role, stating it served hundreds of people daily for a range of vital services.
Essential Services Now at Risk
The now-closed centre was praised for its efficiency and simplicity. It provided crucial Aadhaar-related services, including:
- New Aadhaar card enrolment
- Name corrections and updates
- Change of address
- Mobile number linking
- Other documentation updates
Its reputation for handling a large number of applicants quickly made it a hub not just for Dharwad city dwellers, but also for people from neighbouring taluks and rural areas. The relocation forces all these citizens to travel to Hubballi, incurring additional time and cost.
Social Organization Joins the Fray
Prior to the protests at the Deputy Commissioner's office, members of the social organization 'Dharwad Dhwani' staged a symbolic padayatra (foot march). They walked from Mandi Plaza near Kittur Chennamma Park to the DC's office to submit a formal memorandum voicing their strong objection to the closure.
The collective action by a political party, a social group, and the general public underscores the decision's perceived negative impact on local governance and citizen convenience. The protestors remain firm in their call for authorities to reconsider and continue the Aadhaar services in Dharwad.
