The ruling Congress party in Karnataka found itself embroiled in intense last-minute negotiations on Saturday as it struggled to finalize candidates for the crucial Davanagere South and Bagalkot assembly seats. With the Bharatiya Janata Party having already announced its candidates on Thursday, and Monday marking the final deadline for filing nominations for the April 9 by-elections, the Congress faces mounting pressure to resolve its internal disagreements and present a united front.
Leadership Confirms Sunday Announcement Deadline
All India Congress Committee general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, who has been camped in the state to mediate the disputes, confirmed that the party would announce its candidates by Sunday morning. He outlined the decision-making process, stating that Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah would submit their recommendations, after which AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi would make the final determination.
"We have conducted extensive consultations to accommodate competing interests within the party," Surjewala emphasized. "Even the slightest dissent among party workers has been considered. If one worker holds a different opinion, it must be heard. That is the essence of the Congress party. We will not bulldoze any opinion."

The selection process in Davanagere South has proven particularly contentious, with the party caught between conflicting demands from minority community functionaries and the influential Shamanuru family. Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan and other leaders have vigorously advocated for a candidate from the minority community, holding detailed discussions with both Kharge and Surjewala to press their case.
Simultaneously, Minister SS Mallikarjun has strongly pushed for a ticket for his son, Samarth Shamanur, creating a significant rift within party ranks. The situation has escalated to the point where both Samarth Shamanur and local functionary Sadique Pailwan have filed their nominations without securing the party's official 'B' form, highlighting the depth of the internal discord.

Surjewala has been actively engaged in resolving the deadlock, holding separate meetings on Friday with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, in addition to consulting with the election in-charges of both constituencies.
