Congress Condemns Supriya Sule's Remarks on Fadnavis and Dabholkar Legacy

Controversy has erupted within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance in Maharashtra after the Congress party sharply criticized NCP (SP) working president Supriya Sule for her recent comments regarding Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the legacy of slain rationalist Narendra Dabholkar. The political firestorm unfolded on Saturday, with Congress state president Harshwardhan Sapkal calling for Sule to immediately withdraw her statement, which he labeled as "completely misleading and disappointing."

Supriya Sule's Statement and Clarification

Supriya Sule, the Baramati MP, had earlier appreciated Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for taking action against Nashik-based astrologer Ashok Kharat. While interacting with reporters in Delhi, Sule stated that, keeping aside political differences, Fadnavis had taken a stand in the case in the interest of Maharashtra. She further recalled the contributions of Narendra Dabholkar, saying, "Dabholkar spent his entire life fighting against ill-practices and superstition in society. He sacrificed his life while creating awareness among common people. After his murder, the law against superstition was introduced in the state. We will have our political differences with the chief minister, but it is good that he is carrying forward the same legacy."

However, Sule later clarified to TOI that her statement was misconstrued. She emphasized that she did not equate Dabholkar's contribution with Fadnavis' recent action but meant to say that the chief minister should carry forward the legacy of Dabholkar's progressive ideology and the progressive state of Maharashtra.

Congress's Strong Reaction

Congress state president Harshwardhan Sapkal launched a scathing critique of Sule's remarks. He argued that Dabholkar dedicated his life to promoting progressive ideology, while Fadnavis supports a regressive ideology. Sapkal highlighted his personal involvement as a member of the committee that drafted the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013. He pointed out that Fadnavis has supported those who opposed this act, making Sule's statement particularly disappointing.

"Her statement is completely misleading and disappointing. Dabholkar spent his life in promoting progressive ideology, while Fadnavis supports the ideology which is regressive in nature," Sapkal stated. He firmly demanded that Sule withdraw her comments immediately, underscoring the ideological divide within the MVA alliance.

Political Implications and Sule's Response

This controversy highlights the ongoing tensions within the MVA coalition, which comprises Congress, NCP (SP), and Shiv Sena (UBT). The disagreement over Sule's remarks could strain inter-party relations, especially as it touches on sensitive issues of ideology and legacy in Maharashtra politics. Sule responded to Sapkal's criticism by saying, "Sapkal has all the right to make a statement, and I will not object to it. However, I have not equated Dabholkar's contribution with Fadnavis' recent action. I was saying that the chief minister should carry forward the legacy of the progressive state of Maharashtra."

The incident raises questions about the alignment of values within the alliance and how such public disagreements might impact their unity moving forward. As the debate continues, it underscores the complex dynamics of Maharashtra's political landscape, where historical figures like Dabholkar remain potent symbols in contemporary discourse.
