India's Piped Gas Network Expands Rapidly with 8 Lakh New Consumers in One Month
In a significant push to reduce dependence on traditional cooking gas cylinders, India has added nearly eight lakh new piped gas consumers over the past month, according to a top government official. This expansion is part of a coordinated drive by the government and gas companies to promote cleaner and more efficient energy sources for households and commercial establishments.
Half of New Connections Already Activated, Surrender of LPG Cylinders Gains Momentum
Approximately half of these new piped gas connections—serving both residential and commercial users—have already been activated, while the remaining are currently under process. In a parallel development, over 16,000 LPG connections have been voluntarily surrendered following government encouragement. This initiative aims to ensure that individuals with active piped gas connections do not retain unnecessary cylinders, thereby easing systemic pressure.
Consumers wishing to surrender their LPG connections can submit details through a designated online portal. This portal features a 'hall of fame' section that recognizes and applauds those who have voluntarily given up their cylinder connections, fostering a culture of responsible energy use.
Government Assures Sufficient Fuel Stocks Amid Supply Concerns
Addressing widespread concerns over potential shortages and long queues at distribution points, officials have confirmed that there is ample stock of crude oil, petroleum products, and cooking gas. These reserves are being consistently replenished to meet ongoing demand. "We have managed quite well, delivering around 50 lakh cylinders consistently, fully meeting domestic demand and up to 80% of commercial demand. There is no reason for anybody to fear shortages," the official stated.
The government has also been proactive in securing additional supplies, importing fuel from various sources as needed. "We have managed quite well for over a month, and we are tying up supplies and importing from wherever required," the official added, highlighting the robustness of the current supply chain.
Shift to Alternative Cooking Methods and Enhanced Delivery Systems
To further mitigate reliance on conventional fuels, the Centre has actively encouraged the adoption of alternative cooking technologies such as induction cooktops and electric stoves wherever feasible. This move aligns with broader environmental and efficiency goals.
Simultaneously, the delivery mechanism for LPG cylinders has seen substantial improvements:
- Online cylinder bookings have surged to 95%, streamlining the ordering process.
- Authentication code-based deliveries—designed to prevent diversion at the distributor level—have increased dramatically from 53% in February to 90% currently.
Support for Migrant Populations and Industrial Raw Material Flow
Recognizing the needs of migrant populations without regular LPG connections, oil companies have sold approximately 6.6 lakh portable 5kg cylinders since March 23. Sales peaked at 90,000 units on a recent Saturday, up from a daily average of 70,000 to 75,000 prior to the conflict in West Asia.
Additionally, the government anticipates that recent policy measures will enhance the flow of raw materials to industries grappling with shortages. Sectors ranging from packaging to pharmaceuticals have been adversely affected by supply disruptions stemming from the West Asia conflict, and these steps aim to alleviate such challenges.
This comprehensive approach underscores India's commitment to strengthening its energy infrastructure, ensuring supply stability, and promoting sustainable consumption patterns across the nation.
