Congress Stages Protest in Jaipur Over Alleged LPG Shortage
The state Congress in Rajasthan organized a significant demonstration at Shaheed Smarak in Jaipur on Friday, voicing strong opposition to an alleged shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders. The protest targeted the Central government, with accusations of policy failures that have reportedly caused considerable hardship for consumers across the state.
Leadership and Allegations
The demonstration was spearheaded by Govind Singh Dotasra, the president of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee. Addressing a gathering of party workers and supporters, Dotasra launched a scathing critique of the Central administration. He asserted that key promises made prior to the 2014 general elections—including commitments to control inflation, reduce unemployment rates, and curb systemic corruption—have largely remained unfulfilled under the current government's tenure.
Dotasra specifically highlighted issues with LPG access, alleging that the Centre's much-publicized push to expand the availability of cooking gas has faltered significantly. He claimed that numerous households are now encountering severe difficulties in securing timely refills of their LPG cylinders, disrupting daily life and increasing economic strain.
Detailed Criticisms and Broader Concerns
In his address, Dotasra pointed to visible signs of distress, including long queues forming outside gas agencies and a steady rise in cylinder prices. He argued that this dual problem of scarcity and inflation has worsened the situation not only for domestic consumers but also for small-scale industries that rely heavily on LPG for their operations.
The Congress leader expanded his criticism to include other contentious policies, such as demonetization and the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Dotasra alleged that both initiatives caused widespread public distress without delivering the anticipated positive outcomes, further eroding public trust in governance.
"The Modi government has consistently made people stand in queues for essential commodities like gas, CNG, and petrol-diesel," Dotasra stated. "However, the manner in which gas cylinder prices are escalating is particularly alarming. The impending inflation and the additional financial burden that will inevitably fall on ordinary citizens are deeply worrisome. It is evident that the Centre's policies and underlying intent are fundamentally flawed."
Support from Opposition Leaders
Adding weight to the protest, Tikaram Jully, the Leader of Opposition in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, also addressed the gathering. Jully accused authorities of downplaying the severity of the LPG crisis. He contended that while officials publicly deny any shortage, many people are struggling to obtain cylinders, facing both availability issues and affordability challenges due to rising prices.
Jully emphasized that the increasing cost of LPG cylinders has disproportionately impacted poorer households, exacerbating their financial burdens during an already difficult economic period. He called for immediate governmental intervention to address both the supply constraints and the pricing mechanisms to alleviate public suffering.
The protest underscores growing political tensions in Rajasthan over resource management and economic policies, with the Congress positioning itself as a vocal critic of the Centre's approach to essential commodities and broader governance issues.
