Congress Stages Protest March in Kottayam Over Alleged Cooperative Bank Corruption

In a significant political development, the Congress party on Tuesday organized a protest march in Kottayam, Kerala, targeting alleged corruption at the Adoor Service Cooperative Bank. This demonstration occurred just one day after the bank's president, Ponthamara Pillai, who is a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM, submitted his resignation from the position.

Demand for Comprehensive Investigation into Bank Irregularities

The primary objective of the protest march was to demand a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the reported irregularities and financial mismanagement at the Adoor Service Cooperative Bank. Protesters gathered and marched towards the Adoor taluk cooperative office, voicing their concerns over transparency and accountability in the institution's operations.

Confrontation with Police During the March

As the protest march progressed, police personnel attempted to halt the demonstrators at the gate located below the Adoor revenue tower. Despite this initial intervention, the protesters persisted and continued their march forward. Police made a second attempt to stop them on the first floor of the building, which escalated into a scuffle and verbal altercation between the law enforcement officers and the Congress activists.

Amid the heightened tensions, a group of determined protesters managed to reach the cooperative office situated on the fourth floor. However, police swiftly intervened at this point, preventing them from entering the office premises and further escalating the situation.

Discussions and Assurance from Authorities

Following the confrontation, discussions were held with the assistant registrar of cooperatives. The meeting was led by prominent Congress leaders, including DCC general secretary Ezhumkulam Aju and municipal councillor Shibu Chirakkarott, along with other party representatives.

During the discussions, the assistant registrar provided an assurance to those present at the meeting. He committed that further investigations related to the corruption allegations and irregularities at the Adoor Service Cooperative Bank would be conducted to address the concerns raised by the protesters.

This protest highlights ongoing political tensions in Kerala regarding governance and financial integrity in cooperative institutions, with the Congress leveraging the issue to challenge the ruling CPM's administration.
