Strains Emerge in Jharkhand's Ruling Coalition as Congress Criticizes Own Government
Signs of significant strain within Jharkhand's ruling Mahagatbandhan alliance became publicly visible on Tuesday, as the Congress party launched a pointed attack against its own government over deteriorating law and order conditions and alleged illegal land acquisition practices in the state's mining belts. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), however, moved swiftly to downplay the emerging differences, emphasizing that as alliance partners, such issues should be resolved through dialogue at the appropriate forums.
Congress Raises Alarms Over Law Enforcement and Land Rights
The tensions surfaced just a day after JMM central general secretary and spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharjee referred to the Congress as a 'poisonous snake' during an interview with a local web portal—a comment he later claimed was taken out of context. Undeterred, Congress state in-charge K Raju, accompanied by senior party members, held a press conference at a city hotel in Ranchi where he sharply questioned police inaction in the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Hazaribag last week.
Raju expressed grave concerns regarding the non-implementation of the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act of 2013, particularly in mining command areas. He highlighted the recent demolition of the house of suspended senior Congress member Yogendra Saw by the Hazaribag administration. Saw was protesting in Barkagaon, demanding fair compensation for land losers affected by mining operations when the demolition occurred.
"The manner in which police force was deployed against our senior member at the behest of mining interests indicates a biased approach by the Hazaribag administration," Raju asserted. "After reviewing the land acquisition scenario and the grievances of affected landowners in mining zones, it is evident that prescribed regulations are being blatantly ignored."
Congress insiders revealed that the action against Saw was viewed as unnecessary, exposing deeper unease within the party ranks regarding the alliance's governance. Raju announced that the Congress has decided to launch a comprehensive campaign across all such affected areas to ensure proper implementation of land laws and accountability for errant officials.
Broader Critique Extends to Education and Governance
Expanding his criticism, Raju also targeted the government school system, citing observations from a nine-day party training camp for newly elected district presidents of Jharkhand and Odisha held in West Singhbhum. "In remote villages, impoverished families are compelled to enroll their children in private schools due to the deplorable state of government educational institutions," he noted.
Defending the Congress's decision to publicly critique its alliance partner, Raju explained, "Congress cannot remain silent on issues affecting the public. By raising these concerns, we believe we are actually assisting our coalition government. We regularly meet with the Chief Minister to discuss and collaborate on resolving such matters." He cited the recent establishment of a state coordination committee, agreed upon by the CM, as an example of productive engagement.
Political Context and Reactions from Allies and Opposition
In the 81-member Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, the JMM holds 34 seats and the Congress 16, forming the core of the ruling Mahagatbandhan government. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) serves as the principal opposition with 21 seats. Interestingly, Chief Minister Hemant Soren has recently targeted both Congress and BJP in his campaign speeches in Assam, accusing them of historical neglect toward tribal communities in tea estate regions.
Political analysts suggest that the escalating war of words may be partly attributed to pressure tactics ahead of elections for two Rajya Sabha seats from the state. JMM spokesman Bhattacharjee clarified to media that his earlier comments were misinterpreted. "In Assam, our struggle is against all parties that have failed the tea tribes for centuries. My remarks about Congress were specifically in that context, advocating for Scheduled Tribe status for these communities," he stated, adding that each party maintains its distinct ideology.
Regarding the Congress's allegations, Bhattacharjee remarked, "As alliance partners, any issues should be raised through proper channels with the Chief Minister for amicable resolution."
Opposition BJP Seizes Opportunity to Criticize Coalition
The opposition BJP wasted no time in capitalizing on the internal discord, accusing both Congress and JMM of hypocrisy. BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo commented, "If Congress is genuinely dissatisfied with governance, law and order, and other critical issues, why do they not sever ties? Their reluctance reveals a hunger for power. This unholy alliance is founded solely on opportunism and self-interest, with the common people bearing the consequences."
The unfolding scenario underscores the fragile dynamics within Jharkhand's ruling coalition, as substantive policy disagreements and political maneuvering threaten to undermine governmental stability and public trust.
