Coimbatore Village Withdraws Election Boycott After Water Supply Assurance
Residents of Immidipalayam, located near Kinathukadavu in Coimbatore district, have officially withdrawn their decision to boycott the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly election scheduled for April 23. This reversal comes after local officials provided firm assurances that concrete steps will be taken to resolve the severe drinking water issues plaguing the village. The officials' commitment was prompted by a report published by The Times of India on March 27, which brought widespread attention to the crisis faced by approximately 400 Arunthathiyar families in the area.
Report Highlights Plight, Spurs Official Action
The TOI report, titled "Residents threaten to boycott polls over lack of drinking water," detailed the dire situation where villagers were forced to travel nearly four kilometres daily to fetch water. This hardship led them to demand alternative arrangements for a regular and reliable drinking water supply. Following the publication of the article, Coimbatore district collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar took immediate action on Friday, directing relevant authorities to address the issue promptly.
In response, Kinathukadavu block development officer S Rajesh Kumar, along with officials from the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, conducted a thorough inspection of Immidipalayam. Their visit aimed to assess the feasibility of implementing a sustainable water supply solution for the affected residents.
Root Causes and Proposed Solution
An official involved in the inspection explained that the disruption in drinking water supply was primarily caused by ongoing infrastructure projects, including road work, electric pole erection, and other construction activities in the region. To mitigate this, authorities have devised a plan to supply water to Immidipalayam from Devaradipalayam village in Kodangipalayam panchayat. This will be achieved through the Sooleshwaran combined drinking water project, which is expected to provide a long-term resolution.
"We are planning to supply water to Immidipalayam from Devaradipalayam village in Kodangipalayam panchayat through the Sooleshwaran combined drinking water project," stated the official. "Work on preparing the estimate for the project is under way. Once it is completed, pipeline-laying work from the Sooleshwaran combined drinking water project will begin after obtaining permission from the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board."

The assurance of action has successfully persuaded the villagers to participate in the democratic process, thereby averting a potential boycott that could have impacted voter turnout in the region.
