Chhattisgarh's Aviation Sector Takes Off with Major Infrastructure Upgrades
In a significant development for regional connectivity, Chhattisgarh has expanded its aviation network with the commencement of night operations at Bilaspur airport and the launch of new flight services from Ambikapur to Delhi and Kolkata. These initiatives mark a strategic push to enhance air travel accessibility across the state.
Night Operations Inaugurated at Bilaspur Airport
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai inaugurated night operations at Bilasa Devi Kevat Airport in Bilaspur on March 29, personally boarding the first late-night flight to Raipur. This milestone follows a substantial infrastructure upgrade, with the airport transitioning from Visual Flight Rules (VFR) to Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) at a cost of approximately Rs 31 crore.
The comprehensive upgrade includes the installation of advanced navigation systems, improved runway conditions, and enhanced lighting infrastructure. These improvements now enable all-weather operations, allowing flights to function safely in low visibility conditions and after dark, which was previously restricted.
However, the immediate application of night operations will primarily benefit emergency services, medical evacuation flights, charter operations, and non-scheduled flights. Regular commercial night services are anticipated to commence only after airlines initiate operations utilizing the new capabilities. State government officials emphasize that this facility will dramatically improve time-sensitive services, particularly in medical emergencies, while simultaneously boosting trade, tourism, and investment prospects in the region.
During the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Sai highlighted that the shift to IFR capability represents a new phase of reliable air connectivity for Chhattisgarh. He underscored that night operations would strengthen life-saving services and catalyze regional economic growth.
New Flight Services Connect Ambikapur to Major Cities
In a parallel development, Alliance Air launched flight services from Ambikapur to Delhi on Monday, operating from Maa Mahamaya Airport at Darima. This new route provides the Surguja region with direct air access to the national capital, addressing a long-standing connectivity gap.
The Ambikapur-Delhi service will operate twice weekly, specifically on Mondays and Wednesdays, utilizing a 72-seater aircraft. While Monday flights will run directly between the two cities, Wednesday services will include a stopover in Bilaspur. The introductory fare has been set at approximately Rs 6,500, with minor fluctuations expected based on demand and operational factors.
Further expanding the aviation network, flights between Ambikapur and Kolkata are scheduled to commence from April 2. These services will also operate twice weekly, on Thursdays and Saturdays, with routing via Bilaspur. The fare for this route is around Rs 6,000. Bookings for both new routes are now open through the airline's official website and major travel portals.
Government officials project that these new air connections will significantly improve regional connectivity, substantially reduce travel time, and provide substantial benefits to patients requiring specialized medical care, students pursuing education opportunities, and businesses engaged in trade and commerce across the Surguja region.
Aviation Group Raises Safety Concerns
Despite the celebratory announcements, a local aviation advocacy group has raised important safety concerns regarding the practical implementation of night operations at Bilaspur airport. The 'Air Service Jan Sangharsh Samiti' has pointed out that the effective runway length for night operations may have been reduced to approximately 1,450 metres.
The group contends that this length might be insufficient for the safe take-off and landing of ATR aircraft, which are commonly used for regional connectivity. In response, they have demanded runway expansion and upgradation to 4C category standards, questioning the practical rollout of full-fledged night services without these enhancements.
This concern highlights the ongoing challenges in balancing rapid infrastructure development with stringent safety protocols, suggesting that further investments may be necessary to fully realize the potential of Chhattisgarh's aviation expansion.
