Chennai Tender Coconut Vendors Struggle with Green Waste Disposal Crisis
In Pallavaram, Chennai, tender coconut vendors are facing a significant challenge as the private contractor of the Tambaram City Municipal Corporation has stopped collecting green waste from their shops. With summer approaching and demand for tender coconut rising across the city, more than 10 shops in the area are affected by this issue, leading to operational disruptions and increased costs.
Vendors Forced to Rely on Private Transport for Waste Disposal
Currently, there is no facility available to process green waste, compelling vendors to depend on private vehicles to transport their waste to dumpyards. Prabhakaran, a vendor in Pallavaram, highlighted the severity of the situation. "Each shop sells at least 100 to 150 tender coconuts every day. We spend around 1,000 rupees to hire a private vehicle to transport the waste to a yard," he said. This additional expense is straining their businesses, especially during peak summer sales.
Confusion Over Corporation Orders and Sanitation Worker Claims
According to the vendors, sanitation workers have cited a 'commissioner's order' instructing them not to collect green waste from commercial establishments. "Sanitation workers said the corporation recently procured compactor trucks that cannot process green waste. Officials have asked us to dispose of the waste ourselves," Prabhakaran added. This has created confusion and frustration among the vendors, who feel abandoned by the municipal system.
Corporation Commissioner Denies Issuing Such Orders
In response to these claims, Corporation Commissioner S Balachander stated that no such order has been issued to stop collecting green waste. "A new facility to process green waste is being set up within the corporation limits and will soon be handed over to a private contractor. We will take steps to ensure proper collection," he assured. This announcement offers a glimmer of hope, but vendors remain skeptical until concrete actions are taken.
