Major Narcotics Bust at Surat International Airport
In a significant operation highlighting the persistent challenge of drug trafficking through aviation routes, customs authorities at Surat International Airport (SIA) made a major seizure on Saturday. The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department confiscated 1.97 kilograms of high-grade hydroponic cannabis, with an estimated street value of Rs 1.97 crore.
Flight Inspection Leads to Discovery
The contraband was discovered during a thorough search of Air India Express Flight IX-263, which had arrived from Bangkok on March 20. Customs officials conducted a detailed examination of the aircraft following standard security protocols.
The drugs were found concealed in seven vacuum-packed polythene packets, which had been carefully wrapped in brown tape for additional camouflage. Investigators located these packets hidden within the backrests of four specific seats: 28A, 28B, 28E, and 28F.
Passenger Interception and Arrests
Following the recovery of the narcotics, customs officials immediately intercepted two passengers who had arrived on the Bangkok-Surat flight. During subsequent questioning, both individuals allegedly confessed to their involvement in the smuggling operation.
More significantly, they revealed the identity of a third passenger who was scheduled to transport the contraband onward via a domestic flight from Surat to Delhi. This revelation exposed a coordinated smuggling strategy involving multiple individuals working in tandem.
Sophisticated Smuggling Methodology
Sources familiar with the investigation explained the sophisticated nature of the smuggling operation. The traffickers employed a calculated tactic where drugs were concealed within aircraft seats upon arrival from an international destination.
The plan involved having another passenger retrieve the hidden consignment during the aircraft's subsequent domestic journey. This method was designed to bypass security checks by separating the international arrival from the domestic transportation of the contraband.
Forensic Confirmation and Legal Proceedings
The seized material was examined by the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory, where testing confirmed the substance as cannabis. The total weight of the confiscated contraband was precisely measured at 1,972.2 grams.
All three accused individuals have been formally arrested under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. They were produced before a judicial court and have been remanded to judicial custody as the investigation continues.
Pattern of Similar Incidents at Surat Airport
This latest seizure underscores the ongoing vigilance required at Surat airport, even as traffickers continually attempt to exploit both international and domestic flight routes for illicit activities. The incident follows a pattern of similar cases reported in recent weeks.
On February 9, customs officials recovered 3.7 kilograms of hydroponic cannabis valued at Rs 3.75 crore from another Bangkok-Surat flight. In that instance, the packets had been concealed near lifejackets located under passenger seats.
Just one day earlier, authorities arrested four individuals with contraband worth Rs 6 crore in a comparable smuggling attempt. Then on February 18, officials seized 6.4 kilograms of cannabis worth Rs 6.4 crore from two passengers arriving from Bangkok, recovering thirty vacuum-packed packets from their luggage.
Ongoing Investigation and Network Tracing
Investigations into the latest seizure are actively progressing, with authorities working to trace the larger criminal network behind these organized smuggling attempts. Key areas of focus include identifying the source of the drugs and determining their intended recipients within India.
The repeated incidents suggest an organized trafficking operation targeting Surat as a transit point, utilizing the airport's connectivity to both international destinations like Bangkok and domestic routes to major Indian cities.
Customs officials have emphasized their commitment to maintaining heightened surveillance and implementing advanced screening techniques to combat these sophisticated smuggling methods. The successful interception demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated intelligence and inspection protocols at India's international airports.
