Chennai MLA Aassan Maulaana Confident of Re-election, Dismisses Anti-Incumbency Claims
In the bustling constituency of Velachery, Chennai, incumbent MLA Aassan Maulaana is brushing aside widespread talk of anti-incumbency as he campaigns vigorously for re-election. The Congress candidate, in a detailed interaction during his campaign trail, asserted with conviction that there is absolutely no anger against him on the ground among voters.
Confidence in Victory and Response to Criticism
Maulaana expressed strong confidence in winning by a comfortable margin, directly addressing past controversies. When questioned about backlash from a 2023 statement where he remarked that floodwater would recede only naturally, he dismissed it as a smear campaign. "My comment was misunderstood," he clarified. "There was a high tide at that time, and water doesn't recede during high tide. It's being used against me politically."
Alliance Dynamics and Seat Allocation
The MLA also touched upon the internal dynamics within the opposition alliance, noting that the DMK had lobbied hard for the Velachery seat but he ultimately secured it. "If there was genuine anti-incumbency, they would have taken the seat," he argued, suggesting this indicates strong local support. He attributed his candidacy to the educated voter base in Velachery, whom he believes will back him, and mentioned receiving blessings from senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge.
When asked about cooperation with the DMK, Maulaana praised their coordination, calling it "amazing," highlighting smooth alliance functioning in the run-up to the elections.
Projects and MLA Fund Utilization
Reflecting on his five-year tenure, Maulaana identified one key project he wished to implement but couldn't: a sewerage connection initiative. "When I initiated it, the government said to let them finish storm water drain work first," he explained, pointing to bureaucratic delays.
However, he detailed several projects successfully funded through his MLA allocations:
- Public Health Focus: A significant portion of funds was directed towards gyms, emphasizing his commitment to community health and fitness.
- Infrastructure Development: Construction of bus shelters, many of which were removed due to road widening projects, to improve public transport amenities.
- Educational Enhancements: Funding for schools to install RO water systems, computer labs, and smart classrooms, boosting educational infrastructure.
- Community Facilities: Building six ration shops and redeveloping parks, enhancing daily life and recreational spaces for residents.
Electoral Predictions and Core Promise
Addressing concerns about a narrow victory margin in the past and the entry of new players like TVK potentially tightening the race, Maulaana remained unfazed. He predicted a win by 15,000 to 20,000 votes, showcasing his optimism.
When asked for the one reason people should vote for him, he stated simply: "If you want progress, vote for me." He pledged to ensure that everyone without property documents (pattas) receives them, positioning himself as a champion for housing rights and development in Velachery.
As the election campaign intensifies, Maulaana's assertions and project highlights aim to solidify his standing among the educated and development-oriented voters of this key Chennai constituency.
