Speeding Car Causes Multi-Vehicle Pileup in Chennai, Leaves Five Injured
A high-speed car collision with multiple motorcycles in Thoraipakkam, Chennai, resulted in five individuals sustaining injuries on Monday night. The incident occurred on Rajiv Gandhi Salai, a major thoroughfare, highlighting ongoing road safety concerns in the city.
Details of the Accident and Immediate Aftermath
According to police reports, the car was traveling from Chennai towards Sholinganallur at an excessive speed. Near the Thoraipakkam signal, where traffic was particularly congested, the vehicle lost control and crashed into more than five motorcycles. The forceful impact threw riders off their bikes, causing injuries to five people and damaging several vehicles in the process.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as other motorists immediately pursued the speeding car. They managed to intercept it a short distance away from the accident site. In a swift turn of events, the driver was pulled out of the vehicle and assaulted by the enraged public before being handed over to the authorities.
Police Investigation and Driver Identification
The driver has been identified as Bhaskaran, aged 47. Police have registered a formal case and are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Authorities are specifically examining whether Bhaskaran was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, which could have contributed to the reckless driving.
This case underscores the critical need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and public awareness campaigns to prevent such dangerous occurrences on Chennai's roads. The involvement of the public in apprehending the driver also raises questions about vigilante justice versus lawful procedures in emergency situations.
