A chain snatcher sustained a bullet injury to his leg and was arrested following an encounter with Shivpur police on Friday morning in Varanasi.

Details of the Incident

ACP (Cantt) Apoorv Pandey stated that Shivpur SHO Ajit Kumar Verma and his team were on night patrol when informers alerted them about criminals moving on the Ring Road in the early hours. The team cordoned off the Sindhora-Chandmari underpass and began checking vehicles. During the drive, they signaled a youth on a motorcycle to stop. He attempted to flee but fell after his bike skidded. He opened fire at the police team, and in retaliatory action, he was shot in the leg and caught.

Identification and Recovery

The injured man was identified as Badal Sahni of Kirahiya under Bhelupur police station. Police recovered a country-made pistol, cartridges, Rs 3,630 cash, and a motorcycle from the spot.

Confession and Background

During initial questioning, Sahni revealed that he and his associate Aman Yadav had snatched a woman's gold chain in Vishwanathpuri Colony on April 30 and sold it at a jeweler's shop. They spent most of the money on drugs for consumption. ACP Pandey confirmed that more cases are registered against Sahni at police stations such as Bhelupur, and efforts have been intensified to nab his accomplice.
