BMC Takes Action Against Unauthorized Construction in Jogeshwari
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) executed a significant demolition operation on Thursday, targeting a car showroom and service center situated along the Western Express Highway in Jogeshwari (East). This action was initiated due to alleged unauthorized construction on the premises, marking a decisive move by civic authorities to enforce urban regulations.
Legal Proceedings and Notices Ignored
Civic officials confirmed that the demolition was carried out after the property owner repeatedly failed to comply with earlier notices issued under Section 351 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act. The unauthorized structures included portions of the ground-floor showroom and workshop, constructed with brick masonry walls and AC sheet roofing, as well as illicit mezzanine floor areas that violated building codes.
The BMC had first alerted the owner to the unauthorized construction with a notice dated April 28, 2022. Following a review of the owner's response and submitted documents, the civic body issued a speaking order on May 30, 2022, explicitly directing the removal of these structures. However, during a subsequent site inspection on March 2, 2026, officials discovered that the unauthorized constructions remained intact, prompting further legal escalation.
Court Involvement and Final Demolition
The matter escalated to the Bombay High Court, where an appeal against the order and an interim application were filed by the owner. Despite these legal challenges, the BMC proceeded with the demolition after recent developments in the case. A notice issued on March 4 had instructed the owner and occupiers to vacate the premises in preparation for the action.
On Thursday, the BMC successfully demolished the unauthorized portions of the showroom and workshop, underscoring the authority's commitment to upholding municipal laws. This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by Mumbai's civic body to curb illegal constructions and maintain urban planning standards in the bustling city.
