Violence Mars Election Campaign in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas District
Clashes erupted between supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) during an election campaign in the Basanti area of West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district. The incident, which occurred as BJP candidate Bikash Sardar was campaigning for the upcoming assembly polls, resulted in injuries to police personnel and led to the detention of eight individuals.
Details of the Confrontation
Trouble began when BJP workers allegedly objected to TMC supporters video recording the campaign event from the roadside. A heated argument quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. As police intervened to disperse the crowd and restore order, the situation deteriorated further, with officers coming under attack.
Sub-inspector Sourav Guha sustained a head injury requiring several stitches, while three to four political party workers were also beaten up. Eyewitnesses reported lathi-wielding men chasing individuals on the busy Basanti Bazar road during the clash.
Political Accusations and Official Response
Both political parties have traded accusations regarding responsibility for the violence. BJP candidate Bikash Sardar claimed, "TMC goons carried out an unprovoked attack on our workers when we were peacefully campaigning in the area. Police were inactive."
BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya condemned the incident, stating it demonstrated how the ruling TMC has "crushed all democratic principles in West Bengal and unleashed a reign of fear and terror to crush political dissent." He called upon the Election Commission to take serious note of the matter.
TMC leaders, however, accused the BJP of instigating the violence. Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal has taken a serious view of the incident and sought a detailed report from police authorities. He specifically inquired whether central forces were deployed in the area when the trouble began.
Aftermath and Investigation
An official confirmed that eight people have been detained in connection with the incident, though their political affiliations were not specified. Raids were continuing in the area as part of the investigation. The officer added, "The situation is now under control, and further investigation is underway."
The Basanti (SC) constituency is scheduled to vote on April 29 as part of the second and final phase of the West Bengal assembly elections. This incident highlights the tense political atmosphere in the state during the election period.
