BJP MP Anurag Thakur Condemns Himachal Pradesh Government's Proposed Fuel Cess
BJP Member of Parliament and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur has launched a fierce critique against the Congress-led administration in Himachal Pradesh, accusing it of preparing to impose an additional cess on petrol and diesel. Thakur asserted that this move would directly impact ordinary citizens, transforming promised relief into what he termed "economic exploitation." The statement was issued from Shimla, highlighting growing political tensions over fiscal policies in the state.
Thakur's Strong Opposition to the Cess Proposal
In response to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's clarification that the cess has not yet been implemented, Thakur remained skeptical. He argued, "Once such a thought has entered their policy framework, it is clear they intend to impose it. The BJP will strongly oppose this move and will not allow even a single rupee of additional burden on the people." Thakur dismissed government assurances that the cess would target only traders, emphasizing that the financial strain would inevitably fall on farmers, transporters, taxi operators, shopkeepers, and the general public. He explained that fuel price increases have a cascading effect, influencing every sector of the economy and driving up costs for essential goods and services.
Concerns Over Himachal Pradesh's Financial Health
Thakur also raised alarms about the state's deteriorating financial situation, claiming that Himachal Pradesh has accumulated a debt exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore under the current regime. He criticized the Chief Minister's financial management capabilities, suggesting, "If the CM lacks financial management capability, he should consider handing over the finance portfolio to someone competent." This comment underscores broader concerns about governance and economic stability in the region, as political debates intensify ahead of potential policy implementations.
The controversy highlights ongoing struggles between state and central political forces, with the BJP positioning itself as a defender of public interests against what it perceives as exploitative measures. As discussions continue, the proposed fuel cess remains a contentious issue, sparking debates over taxation, public welfare, and fiscal responsibility in Himachal Pradesh.
