BJP Set for Clean Sweep in Nagpur Zonal Elections, Congress Secures One Zone

BJP Poised for Dominant Victory in Nagpur Zonal Chairperson Elections

In a significant political development in Nagpur, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to achieve a clean sweep in eight of the city's nine zonal chairperson posts, often referred to as 'mini mayors'. All BJP candidates are expected to be elected unopposed, reinforcing the party's stronghold in the region. Meanwhile, the Congress party is positioned to secure the Mangalwari zone without any contest, marking a rare opposition win in the zonal power structure.

Uncontested Wins for BJP and Congress Across Zones

Ashi Nagar stands out as the sole zone where polling will occur, transforming it into the lone political battleground for Friday's elections. This contrasts sharply with the other zones, where uncontested outcomes dominate. The BJP has strategically promoted women leadership by fielding eight female candidates across various zones. These nominees include Lakshmi Yadav in Laxmi Nagar, Dhanashree Deshpande in Dharampeth, Jyoti Deoghare in Hanuman Nagar, Bharti Bunde in Dhantoli, Seema Domne in Nehru Nagar, Uma Deshmukh in Gandhibagh, Abhiruchi Rajgirhe in Satranjipura, and Maheswari Bisen in Lakadganj. With no opposition candidates in these areas, all are set to be elected unopposed.

This move aligns with BJP's broader strategy, as the party has already appointed women corporators as panel chairpersons. Additionally, the mayor Neeta Thakre and deputy mayor Leela Hathibed are both women, underscoring the party's commitment to gender representation in local governance.

Congress Secures Mangalwari Zone Without Contest

In the Mangalwari zone, Congress is set to claim the 'mini mayor' post unopposed, backed by its strength of 11 corporators compared to BJP's five. The absence of a contest here highlights a notable victory for the opposition within the zonal framework. Seema, wife of former corporator Arun Dawre, is poised to win unopposed, further solidifying Congress's position in this area.

Ashi Nagar: The Lone Political Battleground

All attention is focused on Ashi Nagar, the only zone where polling will take place. This 16-member zone presents a complex political arithmetic: Congress holds seven corporators, AIMIM has three, IUML four, BJP one, and BSP one. Initially, Congress, along with AIMIM and IUML, staked claim to the post and projected a united front, even fielding Alisha Khan as its candidate. The alliance also claimed support from BSP's lone corporator, which would provide a comfortable majority.

However, internal discord within AIMIM over a nominated corporator has exposed cracks in this alliance. Under the proportional system, AIMIM was entitled to one nominated seat, but disagreements have triggered infighting, raising the possibility of cross-voting or abstentions. Of the 10 nominated corporators in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), BJP has already secured six, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) one, and Congress two. Although BJP has just one corporator in Ashi Nagar, the party is closely monitoring developments, hoping to capitalize on opposition disunity.

While most zones are witnessing uncontested outcomes, Ashi Nagar emerges as the only arena of direct electoral contest, making it a crucial indicator of future political alignments in Nagpur.

Additional Committee Nominations Filed

In related developments, nomination papers for the post of chairperson of the electricity and fire-fighting committee were filed by second-term BJP corporator Rupali Thakur. Simultaneously, Lakhan Yerawar submitted his nomination for the vice-chairman position of the same panel, adding to the day's electoral activities.
