BJP Corporator Gunned Down in Broad Daylight in Datia
A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator was shot dead in Madhya Pradesh's Datia district on Tuesday morning, creating widespread panic and raising serious questions about law and order in the state. The shocking incident occurred at approximately 8:30 am at Sevda Chungi Square, within the jurisdiction of the Kotwali police station.
Assassination in Full Public View
Kallu Kushwaha, the BJP corporator representing ward number 1, was fired upon from close range by a group of assailants in a brazen attack witnessed by numerous bystanders. Eyewitnesses reported that the corporator collapsed immediately and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police sources confirmed that two bullets were fired into Kushwaha's body, resulting in his instantaneous death.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Local authorities have registered a case against six individuals in connection with the murder: Chhotu Kushwaha, Golu Kushwaha, Sudhir Kushwaha, Umesh Kushwaha, Praveen Valmiki, and Sahib Singh Yadav. Datia Superintendent of Police Suraj Verma provided crucial insights into the investigation, stating, "The corporator had longstanding enmity with several persons. He had recently been released on bail in a separate murder case."
Three of the six accused have already been apprehended: Chhotu Kushwaha, Golu Kushwaha, and Sudhir Kushwaha are currently in police custody as the investigation continues.
Background of Legal Troubles
The murdered corporator had a complex legal history. On February 18, 2025, a Datia court sentenced Kallu Kushwaha and five others to life imprisonment for the murder of former corporator Balkishan Kushwaha. However, he later secured bail from the high court and had been out of jail for approximately four months prior to his assassination.
This violent incident has sent shockwaves through the district, with residents expressing concern about public safety and the escalating political violence in the region. The murder of a sitting elected representative in broad daylight has intensified scrutiny on the state's law enforcement capabilities and political rivalries.
