BJD and Congress Signal Potential Alliance in Odisha Ahead of Local Polls
BJD-Congress Alliance Talks Emerge in Odisha Pre-Polls

BJD and Congress Explore Political Alliance in Odisha Ahead of Key Elections

In a significant political development in Bhubaneswar, the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress party have indicated they might be prepared to set aside their longstanding rivalry and consider a broader political understanding in Odisha. This comes just weeks after both parties supported a joint candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections, with local body polls scheduled for early next year.

Leaders Open to Coalition Possibilities

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das has stated that a coalition between the two parties could become reality if their respective high commands approve such a move. "If the understanding that began with the Rajya Sabha election is taken forward and our top leaders — Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi — agree, and if the AICC high command and Naveen Patnaik want it, there is a possibility," Das explained. He emphasized that while Congress is currently focused on strengthening its presence at the panchayat level, he hasn't ruled out an electoral partnership.

Senior BJD vice-president Debi Prasad Mishra responded by saying that party chief Naveen Patnaik would make an appropriate decision keeping Odisha's interests paramount. "If the OPCC president has made such a statement, he must have examined certain aspects. The BJD has always placed Odisha's interest at the forefront. On various issues, we have come together with different political forces if it serves the state's interest," Mishra noted. He added that any final decision would be taken by Patnaik in consultation with senior leaders and the political affairs committee.

Timing Ahead of Local Body Elections

These political signals emerge as Odisha prepares for panchayat and urban local body elections due early next year. The State Election Commission has already initiated preparatory exercises including:

  • Voter verification processes
  • Reservation of seats for various categories
  • Other typical pre-election activities

These preparations indicate a likely 2027 election timeline for the local body polls, making the current political maneuvering particularly significant.

Recent Political Context and Historical Background

The potential alliance talks follow the recent Rajya Sabha election where BJD and Congress jointly backed independent candidate Datteswar Hota. Despite having sufficient numerical strength in the legislature, Hota lost the election due to cross-voting by legislators from both parties.

Historically, Naveen Patnaik led a coalition government with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for two consecutive terms from 2000 to 2009. After that period, he maintained a stance of being equidistant from both the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and United Progressive Alliance (UPA). However, following the BJD's electoral defeat in 2024, Patnaik has frequently been critical of the BJP on various state and national issues.

Mishra further elaborated on the political dynamics, stating that "new political formation is always possible in a dynamic situation," suggesting that the changing political landscape in Odisha might necessitate unconventional alliances.

The evolving relationship between these two major opposition parties in Odisha could significantly reshape the state's political equations as election preparations intensify. Both parties appear to be weighing their options carefully, with state interests and electoral calculations playing crucial roles in their deliberations.
