Bengal Voter Roll Confusion: Ministers, Candidates Await Clarity

Mass Confusion Grips West Bengal Voters Over Supplementary Electoral Rolls

Lakhs of voters across West Bengal found themselves in a state of uncertainty on Tuesday as the state's first supplementary electoral rolls, published just after midnight, provided no clear indication about the status of those under judicial adjudication. The confusion was widespread, affecting everyone from ordinary citizens to high-profile ministers and election candidates.

Electoral Officials Admit Lack of Clarity

The situation was further complicated when Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal openly admitted he had no definitive answers regarding the adjudication outcomes. "Please check the Election Commission website. I have not memorised how many names have been approved or rejected. I can't say," Agarwal stated, despite having announced just a day earlier that approximately 29 lakh out of 60 lakh voters marked for judicial review had successfully made the cut.

Voters checking their status online encountered vague messages that only added to the confusion, with many seeing the notification: "No adjudication pertaining to this part till 5pm on 23.3.2026." This lack of clear communication left numerous individuals, including state ministers and prominent election candidates, completely bewildered about their voting eligibility.

Judicial Process Remains Opaque

Special Roll Observer Subrata Gupta explained that only the Calcutta High Court, which is supervising the entire adjudication process, could provide specific answers to voters awaiting outcomes. "We can only say that about 30 lakh cases have been disposed of by judicial officers," Gupta noted. "They have not informed us how many of these contain digital signatures. All cases with digital signatures have been published. We can view the electoral rolls, but we are not supposed to see the rest of the statistics. It would not be proper to make assumptions."

Political Candidates Left in Limbo

The uncertainty directly impacted election preparations, with state ministers and Trinamool Congress candidates Shashi Panja and Ghulam Rabbani spending the entire day unsure whether they would be eligible to contest in the upcoming two-phase elections scheduled for April 23 and 29.

"Not just me. None of the 2,759 voters under adjudication in Shyampukur constituency know their status yet," Panja revealed. "While I was campaigning, people kept asking me whether they would be able to vote. I didn't know what to tell them. I don't even know if my name has been cleared."

Sources indicated that Goalpokhar MLA Ghulam Rabbani kept his phone switched off throughout the day and remained mostly indoors after scanning the supplementary list. Meanwhile, Trinamool candidate Kajal Sheikh discovered that his name hadn't been cleared either, expressing hope that it might appear on subsequent lists.

Former Sports Star Also Affected

The confusion extended beyond political circles, with former India footballer Mehtab Hossein making multiple attempts to ascertain his status. Hossein called his Booth Level Officer several times and contacted individuals at the state election office, but found no clearer information than what was available online.

"I checked the Election Commission website repeatedly; it seems the part where my name is listed hasn't been updated yet," Hossein stated. "Will it be updated today or do I need to wait another week? No one has an answer."

The widespread uncertainty has created significant anxiety among voters and candidates alike as election dates approach, with many questioning the transparency and efficiency of the electoral roll update process.
