Unseasonal Rains and Hailstorms Wreak Havoc on Belagavi's Agricultural Heartland
Belagavi district has been struck by a severe bout of unseasonal rain and hailstorms, causing extensive damage to agricultural and horticultural crops across more than 225 hectares. This adverse weather event has hit at the worst possible time, just as farmers were preparing for harvest, plunging the local farming community into financial distress and uncertainty.
Widespread Crop Destruction Across Multiple Taluks
The sudden and violent storms have devastated both staple foodgrains and high-value horticultural produce. According to preliminary assessments, horticultural crops including mangoes, grapes, watermelons, and pomegranates have been severely impacted on approximately 106 hectares. Simultaneously, foodgrain crops such as wheat, cowpea, and corn have suffered damage on an estimated 119 hectares.
The damage to foodgrains has been particularly concentrated in the taluks of Gokak, Raibag, Chikodi, and Mudalagi. Meanwhile, Athani taluk has reported significant losses to grape, pomegranate, and watermelon crops, with large quantities destroyed by the hailstorm.
Official Assessment and Government Response
HD Kolekar, Joint Director of the District Agriculture Department, provided detailed figures, stating that approximately 110 hectares of agricultural crops and 119 hectares of horticultural crops have been damaged due to the unseasonal rains. A comprehensive survey will be conducted under the joint leadership of the agriculture, horticulture, and revenue departments to assess the full extent of the devastation.
This inter-departmental effort aims to compile a detailed report on the damage, which will then be submitted to the government. The findings are expected to inform potential relief measures and support programs for affected farmers.
Infrastructure Damage Compounding the Crisis
The impact of the unseasonal weather extends beyond agriculture, with Hescom (Hubli Electricity Supply Company) also reporting significant losses. Officials have confirmed that more than 50 electric poles, four electrical appliances, and approximately 2 kilometers of power lines have been damaged due to the rain across the district.
The collapse of poles near farmhouses has left many residents without power, adding to the challenges faced by the rural community. This infrastructure damage further complicates recovery efforts and daily life in the affected areas.
Financial Anxiety and Need for Support
The destruction of both essential staples and lucrative cash crops has triggered widespread financial anxiety among Belagavi's farming community. Farmers are now facing substantial losses from these volatile storms, with many uncertain about their immediate future and ability to recover.
The timing of the weather event—striking just before harvest—has maximized the economic impact, as crops that were nearly ready for market have been rendered unsalvageable. This has created an urgent need for support mechanisms, including potential compensation and agricultural assistance programs.
