Karnataka Government Cancels International Conference at State University

The Karnataka government has taken decisive action by scrapping a three-day international conference scheduled to be held at Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) in Mysuru. State authorities declared that the objective of the private event contradicts the fundamental goals of the university and violates established government protocols.

Conference Details and Government Response

The conference, titled ‘Ekatma Manav Darshan: Bharat's Worldview’, was organized by Prajna Pravah, Karnataka, and the Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation. It was planned to take place at the KSOU convocation building in Muktagangotri on Wednesday, intended to commemorate 60 years of lectures by Deendayal Upadhyaya, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which preceded the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

State Higher Education Minister M C Sudhakar clarified the government's firm stance, emphasizing: "Our public universities are meant to be apolitical. No political activities should be conducted in our universities." This statement underscores the administration's commitment to maintaining educational institutions free from political influence.

University Leadership Under Scrutiny

The higher education department also rejected the response provided by KSOU Vice-Chancellor Sharanappa V Halse to a show-cause notice issued to him just a day earlier. Minister Sudhakar asserted that Halse's reply was "not satisfactory" and warned that appropriate action would follow. "The VC is hand-in-glove with the organisers. We will initiate action against him," Sudhakar told reporters, highlighting concerns about potential collusion.

Furthermore, the department raised alarms that organizing such a private event on campus could indirectly impact the ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities at the university. Describing it as a clear breach of protocol, the minister added: "This is a state university, and they have not even bothered to inform us. If at all it was related to improving higher education, the govt should have been a part of it. We cannot misuse university campuses for certain ideological events."

Political Reactions and University Clarification

Some Congress functionaries joined in criticizing the event. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) spokesperson M Lakshmana alleged connections between the university management and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), adding a layer of political controversy to the situation.

In response, KSOU Registrar S K Naveen Kumar denied any organizational involvement by the university, stating: "Like other events, the organisers had paid the rent for the premises." This clarification attempts to distance the institution from the event's ideological underpinnings, framing it as a standard rental arrangement.

Broader Implications for Higher Education

This incident highlights several critical issues in Karnataka's higher education landscape:

  • Governance and Protocol: The government's intervention underscores strict adherence to protocols in state-run universities.
  • Political Neutrality: Authorities are actively working to prevent universities from becoming platforms for political or ideological activities.
  • Accountability: The warning of action against the vice-chancellor signals a focus on holding university leadership accountable for compliance.
  • Investigation Integrity: Concerns about influencing ongoing probes into university irregularities add urgency to the cancellation decision.

The cancellation reflects the Karnataka government's proactive approach to safeguarding the apolitical nature of public educational institutions, ensuring they remain dedicated to academic excellence rather than ideological pursuits.
