AIMIM Candidate's Arrest Ignites Political Firestorm in West Bengal
The arrest of Mofakkerul Islam, a candidate for the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in the 2021 elections, on charges of masterminding the Kaliachak violence has sparked a fierce political confrontation between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal. The incident, which unfolded on Friday, has escalated tensions in the state's already volatile political landscape.
Trinamool Congress Accuses BJP of Destabilization Efforts
In a sharp response, the Trinamool Congress took to social media platform X to name three individuals it claims orchestrated the unrest in Malda's Kaliachak area. The party identified a Bihar police observer stationed in Malda, who was removed after TMC complained he was married to a senior BJP leader from Bihar; Maulana Shahjahan Ali Qadri, an Indian Secular Front (ISF) candidate from Mothabari arrested for organizing the agitation; and Mofakkerul Islam himself.
The TMC asserted, "BJP is running a full-scale operation to destabilize Bengal through their multi-layered agents. Bengal has identified every player. Bengal has connected every dot," highlighting their allegation of a coordinated effort to disrupt the state's peace.
AIMIM Distances Itself from the Arrests
AIMIM quickly distanced itself from the arrests, with Bengal AIMIM chief Imran Solanki stating that those involved were "not linked to any political party but were citizens whose names were removed from the voter list." This move aims to separate the party from the controversy and maintain its political standing amid the turmoil.
BJP Retaliates with Allegations Against Trinamool
The BJP hit back through Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar, who questioned the swift arrest of Islam by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Majumdar displayed photographs showing Islam sharing a stage with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, implying potential Trinamool involvement. "Whether someone else is behind this or not, Trinamool is definitely involved," he declared, escalating the blame game.
On reports of Islam going live on Facebook while in CID custody, Majumdar added, "If true, it supports my allegation that the CID was directed to arrest him so that he could live peacefully. If the NIA arrests him, their treatment will be harsh," suggesting preferential treatment and threatening stricter measures if the National Investigation Agency (NIA) takes over the case.
Trinamool Candidate Denies Involvement in Violence
Sujapur candidate Sabina Yeasmin of the Trinamool Congress, accused by the BJP of participating in the Kaliachak protests, distanced herself from the violence. She stated, "What happened there was wrong. Judicial officers are like guests to us and should have been allowed to do their work. Whatever fight there is, we will fight for our rights — but not by breaking the law," emphasizing a commitment to lawful protest while condemning the unrest.
The political clash underscores the deep-seated rivalries in West Bengal, with both major parties leveraging the arrest to score points ahead of future electoral battles. The situation remains tense as investigations continue and accusations fly between the TMC and BJP.
