AIADMK Signals Comeback Bid with Aggressive Chennai Strategy
In a bold political maneuver, the AIADMK has ceded just three out of sixteen assembly seats in Chennai to its allies, sending a clear message that it intends to mount a direct challenge to the ruling DMK in the upcoming elections. This strategic allocation underscores the party's determination to stage a significant comeback by confronting its primary rival head-on in the state capital.
Key Candidates and Seat Distribution
The AIADMK has deployed three of its former ministers to contest crucial constituencies: D Jayakumar in Royapuram, Benjamin in Maduravoyal, and Gokula Indhira in Anna Nagar. Notably, the party will field its own candidates against Chief Minister M K Stalin in Kolathur and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin in Chepauk, setting the stage for high-profile electoral battles.
The only seats granted to allies are Perambur (PMK), Mylapore (BJP), and Saidapet (AMMK) in the core city, along with Ambattur (PMK) and Avadi (BJP) in the suburbs. This limited distribution reflects AIADMK's confidence in its own organizational strength and voter base across the metropolitan region.
Organizational Strength and Minority Support
AIADMK district secretary R S Rajesh emphasized that the party maintains booth strength equivalent to the DMK, with ten workers per booth and presence in all 298 parts per constituency. He dismissed notions of AIADMK's weakening, stating, "It's a myth that AIADMK has weakened. Minority trust was hit in 2021 due to DMK's anti-BJP narrative, but people are slowly returning."
While the DMK currently holds sway in constituencies like Harbour, Chepauk, Thousand Lights, and Kolathur, the AIADMK is banking on past victories in other seats and aims to regain former strongholds such as Royapuram, RK Nagar, and Mylapore. Campaigning is already underway, with leaders including B Sathyanarayanan in T Nagar and Gokula Indhira engaging in intensive door-to-door outreach.
Strategic Calculations and Internal Dynamics
Within the party, limiting the BJP's presence is viewed as a strategic move to rebuild minority support in what could become a three-way contest. Area secretary J John explained, "Voters would trust AIADMK more as it contests directly, with BJP confined to one seat. We know local issues, DMK's booth operations, and candidate strengths."
However, the decision to allot Perambur to the PMK has triggered unease among some cadres who question the ally's weak local base. Rajesh downplayed these concerns, noting that allies typically contribute only 5% to 10% of votes and asserting that AIADMK would ensure their victory regardless of where they contest.
The AIADMK's approach combines aggressive candidate placement, focused campaigning, and careful alliance management as it seeks to reclaim political ground in Chennai and challenge the DMK's dominance in Tamil Nadu's urban heartland.
