Madurai SSI dies in accident at counting centre

A 56-year-old special sub-inspector (SSI) deployed on security duty at the vote counting centre in Madurai died in a tragic accident on Wednesday night. The officer, identified as P Balamurugan, was attached to the Thilagar Thidal police station and was part of the intensified security arrangements ahead of the counting process.

Accident at Thiagarajar College of Engineering

The incident occurred at the Thiagarajar College of Engineering, which serves as the counting centre for the Madurai North and Madurai South assembly constituencies. According to police sources, Balamurugan was on rotational security duty at the college campus. While arriving on his two-wheeler around midnight, he reportedly lost control and crashed into the entry gate of the college.

Fatal injuries

Due to the impact of the crash, Balamurugan fell off the vehicle and sustained severe head injuries. He died on the spot. Acting on information, a police team rushed to the location, recovered the body, and sent it to Government Rajaji Hospital for an autopsy.

A case has been registered by the traffic investigation wing, and further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
