The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has taken a stringent step to curb open urination and defecation in the city by imposing a fine of Rs 10,000 on offenders. The decision was taken during a recent meeting of the corporation to address the growing problem of public nuisance and unhygienic practices.
New Penalty for Public Nuisance
Under the new rule, anyone found urinating or defecating in public places will be penalized with a hefty fine of Rs 10,000. The move aims to deter people from indulging in such acts and promote cleanliness in the city. The corporation has also directed its enforcement teams to strictly monitor public areas and take action against violators.
Implementation and Monitoring
The municipal corporation has deployed special teams to patrol areas where such incidents are common. These teams will issue challans to offenders on the spot. Additionally, the corporation plans to install more public toilets and improve existing facilities to provide alternatives for citizens.
Residents have welcomed the decision, expressing hope that it will help maintain hygiene and prevent the spread of diseases. However, some have raised concerns about the high fine amount, suggesting that it may be burdensome for lower-income groups.
Previous Measures
Earlier, the corporation had imposed a fine of Rs 500 for spitting in public and Rs 200 for littering. The new fine is significantly higher, reflecting the corporation's determination to tackle the issue of open defecation and urination, which has been a persistent problem in many parts of the city.
The corporation has also launched awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the importance of using sanitary facilities and the consequences of violating the rules. Officials have urged the public to cooperate and report any instances of open urination or defecation.
