Shashi Tharoor Champions Women's Political Representation Amid Internal Congress Debate

Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor has emphatically endorsed the need for increased women's participation in electoral politics. His comments come as a direct response to growing concerns within his own party regarding the minimal allocation of tickets to female candidates for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections.

Internal Criticism Sparks National Conversation

Fellow Congress leader Shama Mohamed publicly voiced her dissatisfaction on social media platform X, highlighting what she described as a glaring disparity in candidate selection. Mohamed pointed out that of the 92 tickets announced by the Congress for the Kerala polls, a mere nine have been allotted to women candidates. She further contrasted this with the Lok Sabha elections, where only one woman was fielded among 16 candidates in Kerala.

"Denied but not defeated," Mohamed wrote in her post, making a direct appeal to senior leader Rahul Gandhi to intervene and bolster support for women leaders within the state unit. Her remarks were made just one day after the Congress party finalized its candidate list for the elections.

Tharoor's Balanced Stance on Winnability and Fairness

When questioned about Mohamed's critique, Tharoor acknowledged the statistical imbalance, stating, "I have been for some time very much in favour of greater women's representation." He expressed clear agreement that with women constituting half the population, their current representation of only 9.8 percent of seats is fundamentally unfair.

However, the senior parliamentarian also outlined the practical considerations that influence ticket distribution. "Those who made these decisions must have taken all factors into account," Tharoor explained, noting that he is not personally involved in the candidate selection process. He emphasized that party officials often prioritize the "winnability" factor, which remains a principal criterion in electoral strategy.

The Promise of Women's Reservation Bill

Looking toward a legislative solution, Tharoor expressed strong optimism about the potential impact of the Women's Reservation Bill. He believes its implementation would effectively resolve these ongoing debates by creating a structured pathway for female political participation.

"But when women’s reservation comes, I think that'll be an end to these debates and we will see a fair opportunity to more hard-working women leaders," Tharoor asserted. He framed the proposed reservation as a mechanism to ensure equitable opportunities for dedicated women in politics, moving beyond ad-hoc considerations.

Kerala's Electoral Timeline and Party Position

Leader of Opposition in Kerala, V.D. Satheesan, confirmed that the Congress has completed its candidate selection process, finalizing all 95 nominees for the upcoming polls. "We had announced 55 candidates earlier and have now finalized the remaining 40. The selection process is complete, and we will now move into campaign mode," Satheesan stated.

The state of Kerala is scheduled to vote in a single phase on April 9, with the counting of votes set for May 4. This internal discussion within the Congress party highlights a broader national conversation about gender parity in Indian politics, juxtaposing ideological support for women's empowerment against the tactical realities of electoral competition.
