Maharashtra CM Orders Probe into Leaked CDRs of Astrologer

Maharashtra Government to Investigate Leak of Sensitive Call Records

In a significant development, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also oversees the home department, declared on Sunday that the state government will launch a formal inquiry into the unauthorized disclosure of Call Detail Records (CDR) belonging to rape-accused astrologer Ashok Kharat. The CM emphasized that obtaining such sensitive data is strictly reserved for official investigating agencies, and the leak to private individuals raises serious concerns about privacy and security protocols.

Political Storm Erupts Over Alleged Phone Contacts

The controversy stems from claims made by activist Anjali Damania on April 3, where she alleged receiving anonymous CDRs indicating that Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde made 17 calls to Kharat in the past. Damania further asserted that several other politicians had contacted Kharat during an unspecified period, sparking a heated political debate. Shiv Sena ministers and leaders have questioned the motives behind the leak, suggesting it might be an attempt to politically target Shinde and undermine his position.

Fadnavis Stresses Need for Evidence-Based Justice

Addressing reporters on the sidelines of a 'Sant Sammelan' in Nashik, CM Fadnavis reiterated the government's commitment to a thorough investigation. "First and foremost, accessing CDRs is the exclusive prerogative of investigating agencies. The state government will definitely probe how this CDR was leaked and identify those responsible for sharing it with private individuals," he stated. Fadnavis underscored that the judicial process relies on robust evidence rather than mere allegations or private conversations. "Justice demands strong evidence, not just allegations and counter-allegations or records of who contacted whom. Action will be taken only against those who were complicit in the heinous crimes committed by Ashok Kharat," the Chief Minister affirmed.

Enforcement Directorate Initiates Financial Probe

In related news, Fadnavis confirmed that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken cognizance of Kharat's bank accounts and properties, with an inquiry already underway. He praised the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for its effective work in uncovering details about Kharat, noting that public confidence in the SIT has led to 12 complaints being registered so far. "According to my information, the ED has commenced its inquiry based on the findings uncovered thus far. Once the land properties are fully mapped, the state government will also take appropriate steps to address any irregularities," Fadnavis added.

Infrastructure Boost for Simhastha Kumbh Mela

During his address to the gathering of seers and sages, CM Fadnavis also highlighted the government's substantial investment in infrastructure development for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Nashik. He revealed that the state is allocating Rs 30,000 crore, with the potential for this amount to increase to Rs 35,000 crore, to enhance city facilities and ensure a successful event. This announcement underscores the administration's focus on both law enforcement and public welfare initiatives amid the ongoing political and legal scrutiny.
