Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, accusing it of scoring a 'double F' in ensuring fuel and fertilizer security for the nation. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Kharge said the BJP-led central government has failed to manage the supply and pricing of essential commodities, causing immense hardship to farmers and common citizens.
Fuel and Fertilizer Crisis
Kharge highlighted that the prices of petrol and diesel have skyrocketed under the BJP regime, while the availability of fertilizers has been erratic. He claimed that the government's policies have benefited a few corporate houses at the expense of the masses. 'The BJP has scored a double F in fuel and fertilizer security,' he said, adding that the opposition will raise these issues in the upcoming Parliament session.
Impact on Farmers
The Congress chief specifically pointed to the plight of farmers who are struggling to get urea and other fertilizers at subsidized rates. He said that the government's failure to ensure timely supply has led to increased input costs, affecting crop yields and farmer incomes. Kharge also criticized the government for not controlling the rising fuel prices, which have a cascading effect on the entire economy.
Government's Response
In response, BJP leaders dismissed Kharge's allegations as baseless and politically motivated. They cited government data showing increased fertilizer production and distribution, as well as measures to stabilize fuel prices. However, Kharge remained unconvinced, stating that the ground reality is different from the government's claims.
Call for Action
Kharge urged the government to immediately address the crisis by reducing excise duty on fuel and ensuring adequate fertilizer supplies. He also called for a comprehensive review of the policies affecting these sectors. The Congress party plans to raise the issue in Parliament and organize protests if necessary.
The attack comes amid rising inflation and public discontent over price hikes. With elections in several states approaching, the issue is likely to become a major political flashpoint.
